Thank You

I just wanted to Thank those of you that responded to my email on Saturday.
There are not many groups out there with people who would take the time out
of their Saturday to help someone on an accounting software. This shows how
truly valuable this list is. I really do appreciate everyone who has
called or emailed me.

I have a feeling with my new job and old job - I will be extremely busy.

Again, thanks to everyone.

Have a Nice Day,

I hope after this I will become a user of Vantage as all of you...

Vantage has both the sql and the progress versions. Is there any
plans to stop supporting one in preference of the other in the near
future? Just wondering if maybe something might have been said at
the user conference.

Just had a recent surprise of a similiar nature by the other package
we were evaluating.

Thanks,

Daniel Sampey
I can't speak with "authority" on the part of Epicor but my sense from the
conference was that both will be supported indefinitely. The SQL version,
as I understood the explanation, uses a bit of Progress code to translate
from SQL. Not Progress on top of SQL but a sort of translator in between.
So with SQL you are not running "both" databases and all your data is truly
handled by SQL Server. Apparently version 5.0 and above is much faster but
not as fast as native Progress.

Progress, on the other hand, I get the impression is felt to be a real rock
(stable & fast) and with modules such as VBI (from CorVu) and FRx the ties
between Vantage and Progress are as tight as ever.

So I would not be too concerned. Unless, of course, this .NET stuff gets
totally out of hand and forces move toward SQL Server.

I spoke to Doug Williams, director of Epicor development regarding this
issue, and he assured me that Progress was Epicor's database choice for
vantage, and will be in the forseable future, as the Progress database is,
in his opinion the best choice for enterprise wide solutions. It can span
multiple platforms, and is said to be faster than SQL.

However, SQL cannot be ignored, as it is currently an industry standard in
databases, and is of course a huge part of the whole .NET thing. There are
customers that need to be able to integrate their vantage database with
existing SQL solutions, or want to go with SQL rather than 4GL as the query
language of choice. For aspiring visual basic developers like myself,
having a SQL database would eliminate the need to have to write 4GL queries,
and would ease the integration of vantage with Office and CAD applications.

PROGRESS has the ability to read and write from a SQL database, and Epicor's
Vantage functions with a progress database, whether the file is a Progress
.db or stored in Microsoft SQL Server.

I examined the possibility of possibly converting to an SQL database upon
our upgrade to 5.0, and decided against it because:

- It would require the purchase of SQL server Enterprise edition @ $11,099
US / 25 users.
- It is slower than the native progress connection / would require server
upgrade.
- My northern california sales rep says only one user is even considering
it.
- The sales rep said I shouldn't for now.

As Progress's SQL interface becomes faster and stable, the benefits may one
day justify the expense, but not at this point.

In general though, SQL and the whole .NET thing is gaining market share,
because BG says it should. Progress, Epicor, and other companies must make
.NET compatible solutions, or they will be squashed.

Unless Progress goes out of business (which I don't see happening in the
forseable future), that's the platform Vantage will probably continue to
reside on, because it is faster and more stable, based on what I've gathered
in talking to Epicor. Meanwhile, Progress continues to improve upon its
implementation of SQL.

Todd -

I want to personally thank you for the time you took to answer my posting. It has helped us decide and soon I'll be posting Vantage user questions with the rest of you.
If you would have any other suggestions on starting out with Vantage, I would appreciate them if you have the time.
Thank you again,

Do it right. Call in a consultant. Spend the time and the money. Plan it
out. Test it thoroughly. Train everyone. Or do what we did.
