I was wondering if anyone was using Crystal Reports with Visual Basic 6.0
program. Microsoft and Seagate support sites don't have much to go with.

I've been using Crystal Reports with VB for the past year and a half.

These two products integrate nicely during the development phase. When it
comes time to deploy the reports, there is a bit of manual work required to
make sure your Visual Basic install package contains all the crystal dll's
it needs.

I've since upgraded to visual studio .net and crystal reports 9. Deployment
is much easier.

The main consideration I'd say with using crystal reports with a
vantage/progress database is choosing the optimal data transfer mechanism.

There's ODBC, CSV exports, export to access databases, the dbf file method
vantage uses. These all have their merits, but 4gl exports to XML is what
we use.

Thad,

Would the Visual Basic installed Crystal version interfere with Vantage
installed one?
Do you have any source of information on how to integrate VB with Crystal?
How do like visual studio .net so far, I am strongly considering upgrading.
Is it true that it's like learning a new language?
Thank you.

Mike

I use VB 6 and Crystal all the time with Vantage 5.1. I think if you
look closer you will find tons of infomation in the Crystal
knowledgebase support.crystaldecisions.com. I suggest using an
installer software like Install Shield though. The VB installer has
it's problems, but I have gotten it to work. I use ODBC, ADO through
ODBC, and XML. Crystal puts out a weak developers guide you can
download for 30 bucks. They also have a pretty good size code
repository. http://support.crystaldecisions.com/updates/default.asp
