V9 - Use of UD tables

One other note on this, if you're concerned about performance (you've got a
UD table with large number of records), you can always add an index.

I use the key fields to make each row unique. If by chance the value I
need to link to another table is a character field, then it works out
great. Just use one of the Key fields.

If it is not a character field, then a store the value in one of the
user defined fields, like Number01, and use that field to link to a
table.

There is no requirement that forces you to only use indexed fields when
joining tables. You can use any field you want. The issue is that as
your data grows, there might be a performance hit.

Depending on the value of the functionality you gain, it may outweigh
the performance hit.

Subject: [Vantage] V9 - Use of UD tables

We have an application for the use of UD tables and I have a question.
The 5 "Key" fields provided are all character fields. Thus all indexes
provided are based on character data. I have a need to index on a
numeric (integer) field. We will be using crystal and BAQ's with the
data that resides in this UD Table(child table) so we cannot create
joins to the table as our parent table linking field is an integer
value. Anyone address this yet?

Thanks,

We replicate the Key we want to be numberic in one of the Number0X fields,
for Instacne if Key1 is to be numeric we insert it in Key1 and Number01 and
then on the BAQ we use the criteria set to join the tables.
Hope this helps.
