Hey all,

I may be the next of us to make the jump from 4.0 to 5.1. I expect to make
the transition sometime over the weekend prior to Christmas. Can anyone
here make any recommendations as to what to do first, or what to look for,
or what not to do. Anything that anyone can suggest, please do.

Thanks

I have install and convert my 4.0 database from 4.0 to 5.1 in my test
environment. Also, my company will be doing the jump before Christmas. Here
is my 2 cents of advice:

1. Download - Print instructions posted in Epicor.
2. Select the best PC (processor-memory) to do schema changes.
3. Back up the database in every step of the way. This way you would not
have to rebuild indexes, apply schema changes, or database conversions
twice(each takes a long time to do).
4. If you have data collector terminals, you need to install vantage gateway
in 5.1. I would install it in a test environment prior to going live (as
everything else).
5. If your database has empty or orphan records and you feel brave enough,
you could do a dump and load the previous week to clean the database and
speed up the process.
6. Someone recommended to post all transactions to maintain GL integrity
(cost and otherwise).

The instructions are somewhat complete. I will do a test run keeping track
of time consumed in each step so I would have an idea of how long each step
might take.

Good luck!

I Definitely agree. This means that you will only need to install 5.1 on
the server when your done, instead of installing 5.0 (and in my case 4.0 as
well).

Of course, if you have a screaming fast server, as in troy's case,
performing the entire upgrade process on the server may still be the best
bet.

Make sure to factor in hard drive speed, as that may be the main bottleneck.
My 1GHZ laptop with 256 megs of RAM took twice as long to do schema's and DB
conversions from 3.0 to 4.0 than my PIII-850 with 512 megs of ram. The
workstation has a SCSI 160 controller (not sure of the RPMs) while the
laptop has an IDE 4400RPM drive.

The ram was not a factor in my case, because in both cases there was ample
amount of free RAM (120+ megs), and relatively low CPU useage (< 25%). Test
DB size is only 180 megs.

I'm currently experimenting with running the changes stand-alone or through
TCP. I'm also going to try performing the changes with the laptop as the
client and the Workstation as the server. I'll be sure to post my findings.

My 2 cents:
We went from 4 to 5.0 last weekend. I had done a test on my notebook the
which was completed a few days before my live conversion. Since I didn't
have time to do a test on my server, I decided to do a parallel conversion
on my notebook at the same time I did my server. Turns out it was a good
move. I have a good server (IBM dual processor 500 MHz CPU, 1gig memory)
but without a test I didn't know how it would actually perform. My schema
change ran 22 hours on the server before I gave up. At that point the
schema change was done on the notebook so I copied the schema change data
over to my server and proceeded from there. I would also start your live
conversion when Tec Support is available. They work till 6:00 central on
Friday. It would be even better if you could schedule your conversion for a
weekend they're working. Upgrading the software doesn't take that long and
in my case it was good to have them check out an error before I proceeded
with converting my 2.5 gig data. I will write more but right now I have to
work on some modified reports.

Good Luck

Jim,

Do as much ahead of time as you can -- especially client installs. The more you can do ahead of the weekend, the more relaxed you'll be that weekend and the less chance of missing something because you're too busy running around (forgetting passwords cause everyone's gone, etc.).

Do your report conversions (both RB and Crystal) ahead of time using your test server. Ideally your test server is in the same place (directory and server) that your final database will be in. If not, still convert the reports to find new fields and tables, then you can just "set location" in Crystal later when you have your Live databases.
The main tables changes we ran into in going to 5.0/5.1 were in the Part table. About a dozen fields from the Part Table were moved to the PartPlant table. You'll need to create a new link for these to the PartPlant table (on company and partnum) and then add the necessary fields back in.

If you're not sure about anything, just ask.

There's a spreadsheet I uploaded to the web page, probably in the Misc
section that details all the 4.0 to 5.0 table changes. Really good info
that I got from an Epicor consultant. It has both dictionaries side by

Yes. As Wayne mentions, definitely take a look at the spreadsheet if you are getting ready to edit reports. It will save you some time and confusion.
