Vantage 8 Service Connect

Hello

If you have access to the Epicor FTP website, there is a webex video you can
download explaining the basic configuration and it has an example

is located in the folder /vantage/Service Connect named
"ServiceConnect_Part1_V1_00.wrf"

Just attended a webcast on .Net and SOA. In the Question/Answer period it was stated that Service Connect requires MS SQL which implies an advantage over Progress I wasn't aware of.

Can anyone shed more light on this? How many are using Progress instead of SQL for V8?

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
I also attened this webcast. We purchase Vantage 8.0 last March, and at the time I wanted to implment SQL server. We talked to several people at Epicor, and they all directed us away from SQL server and pushed us in the Progress direction. In the end they said to stay away from SQL.

Today in the webcast it was a completely different story! They are an authorized reseller of SQL? If so, why didn't they want us to run SQL??? I guess it seems that with some of the additional products requiring SQL server, that they may be heading in the Microsoft direction. If not, then Epicor is quite the opposite of what they preached in their presentation - a different database for each product is not my idea of efficient integration.

I can do you one better: Epicor also pushed us away from SQL.
However, Advanced Print Mgmt and Service Connect BOTH NEED SQL, but
no one told us that until the installer showed up here. I even
specifically asked them about SQL. I'm guessing that the push to
progress on the 8.0 side is all about their programmers. They build
with progress as the back end and that's the only db that they can
be fairly sure will respond as expected.

The extra cost you will have to get that going now is huge! That's a pretty big mistake by Epicor.

Typically, if an application requires SQL Server (like Backup Exec, etc.), the
application developer ships a "run time" version, formerly called the "Desktop
Edition". To find out all of the versions that Microsoft ships in painful
detail, see http://www.developer.com/db/article.php/3502746. One shouldn't
have to buy SQL server to run a product that uses it. IF you do buy a version,
then you get all of the tools to manage it (SQL Analyzer, Enterprise Manager,
etc.)

My understanding is that SQL under V6 was a bomb but that under V8, it's a
whole new ballgame. I'm sure others know for sure, but I'm guessing it's a
function of OpenEdge getting better at database independence. Whether or not
one uses Progress or SQL Server in Vantage, one still have to go through the
Progress layer to get to the data. This is not necessarily true for the 3rd
party applications.

IMHO Progress is a step down from Oracle, and SQL server is a step (or more...) down from Progress. Epicor is pushing SQL server because of their partnership with Microsoft. From a developers perspective, MySQL is just as good, if not better (by far MUCH cheaper) than SQL server. Hundreds of developers and Thousands of MySQL driven websites can't be wrong.

Keep in mind though, that SQL server is slower! We won't/can't even consider using SQL server for our 8.0 upgrade. Epicor didn't suggest it either.

We are.

What do you think of Service Connect? What can and can't it do? For example,
could one use it for migration of parts/bills/routings or just dynamic
documents?

Mark W.
Oracle is perhaps a superior platform if you happen to have an encyclopedic
knowledge of its tuning parameters. SQL Server trumps all with its
connectivity to productivity applications and the sheer volume of available
dba talent. Progress wins for Vantage owing to its native integration with
OE. MySQL just recently acquired ACID compliant transactional capabilities
and will undoubtedly become the database of choice for mission critical
systems if only, as you have pointed out, for cost considerations.

All marketing claims to the contrary, Epicor has a much tighter relationship
with Progress than with MS dating all the way back to the DCD days. Staying
with Progress is certainly the prudent decision at this point in the product
evolution.

mjb

p.s. With all the talk of the service connect issues, I'm surprised that no
mention has been made of the rather clumsy full text indexing implementation
that SQL Server requires.

Michael,

I would tend to agree but certainly the V8 .net front end issue has got to play into the equation sooner or later. I am not a programmer but I know the few I have discussed this issue with all seem to feel that there will always be a performance issue with a .net front end and Progress business logic. That being said you interested readers might want to check out this information seems Progress is addressing the .net "gotta have this interface" issue.

I wish I had a crystal ball.

Staying
with Progress is certainly the prudent decision at this point in the product
evolution.

p.s. With all the talk of the service connect issues, I'm surprised that no
mention has been made of the rather clumsy full text indexing implementation
that SQL Server requires.

IMHO Progress is a step down from Oracle, and SQL server is a step (or
more...) down from Progress. Epicor is pushing SQL server because of their
partnership with Microsoft. From a developers perspective, MySQL is just as
good, if not better (by far MUCH cheaper) than SQL server. Hundreds of
developers and Thousands of MySQL driven websites can't be wrong.

Keep in mind though, that SQL server is slower! We won't/can't even
consider using SQL server for our 8.0 upgrade. Epicor didn't suggest it
either.

You win!

The extra cost you will have to get that going now is huge! That's a
pretty big mistake by Epicor.

I can do you one better: Epicor also pushed us away from SQL.
However, Advanced Print Mgmt and Service Connect BOTH NEED SQL, but no one
told us that until the installer showed up here. I even specifically asked
them about SQL. I'm guessing that the push to progress on the 8.0 side is
all about their programmers. They build with progress as the back end and
that's the only db that they can be fairly sure will respond as expected.

We've asked our rep to send us Service Connect documentation and
pricing. And we certainly need to know the pro's and con's of each
platform.

What we saw looked very good but was only the tip of the iceberg. The
moderator showed Vantage Customer contact maintenance in the user's
Outlook!! It appears that Service Connect is a portal to the database
through MS SharePoint which comes with Windows 2003 Server. So you can
build relationships between the database and any compliant product, like
Outlook.

They didn't get to my question "What about Vendor and Purchase Point
contacts?" Nor "When is Vantage 8 going to .Net 2.0" from 1.1.

We are successfully using Service Connect to daily update ECO changes
into Vantage from Agile - the code took awhile for Epicor to develop,
but it saving us a lot of time and works very well. We are impressed
enough that we are pursuing several other Service connect
applications. My belief is that moving part or BOM's or routings
would be doable.

Service Connect is a product that was written by the Scala division of
Epicor.
Scala have always been MS centric so it's only natural for them to use
MS SQL Server.

Service Connect is a pretty generic Webservice consumer. It can be used with
Vantage but it can also be used for any other application that provides
web services.

Service Connect uses SQL Server to store its internal data. You don't
want to
run Service Connect on your Vantage server anyway, so there's no point in
trying to use the same database platform for both. You're not saving money
or gaining performance if you do.

This is what the reps said in the demo as well.

Service Connect connects to Vantage using the Vantage Web Service layer and
not the business object layer - so don't expect to import thousands of
transactions per minute.

Here are the system requirements from the Service Connect literature:

System Requirements
Processor
. PentiumR III class or better. A Dual PentiumR XeonR with Hyper-threading
support recommended

Memory
. 512 MB of RAM required; 1 GB or more recommended

Server System
. MicrosoftR Windows 2000 ServerT Service Pack 4 or Windows 2003 ServerT
Enterprise Service Pack 1
. Microsoft SQL Server 2000 with Service Pack 4
. Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) 6.0

Recommended Server Configuration
. Server 1: Epicor Service Connect
. Server 2: Microsoft SQL Server (can be shared with Epicor ERP solution)
. Server 3: Microsoft IIS for Epicor Web services (Alternate: shared with
Server 1 or other Epicor application server)

I was recommended (while attending a Service Connect training)

Server 1: Service Connect + SQL Server
Server 2: IIS + Vantage Web Services
Server 3: Vantage

You can split Service Connect and SQL Server into two different servers
(totalling 4 servers), but you're not gaining much with that. Service
Connect
uses SQL Server as a local database only, noone else connects to it.

But you do not want to install SQL Server on a Progress based Vantage
server.

If you do want to use only two servers, then use
Server 1: Service Connect + SQL Server + IIS + Vantage Web Services
Server 2: Vantage

FYI, .Net 3.0 is coming out with Vista:

Vice President S. Somasegar describes the decision to rename WinFX to the .NET

This stuff goes way over my head but the following related article did clarify one thing for me. Apparently .Net 2.0 is retained intact within .Net 3.0 which just adds the WinFX parts. So if Epicor were to move Vantage 8 up to .Net 2.0 then .Net 3.0 should not be an impediment. Right?

To bring the topic full circle, I wonder how much overlap there is with
Vista's Workflow capabilities with Service Connect?

Mark W.
Perhaps I can clarify this a little.

Service connect uses an SQL database to stor the configurations that
you set up.

You daon't have to have the SQL version of the backend database, it
runs on progress.

Basically Service connect uses web services to access the Business
Object the connects to progress.

I hope that clears things up.
