Vantage Business Intelligence

My answer is pretty much the same as Todd's. We have it and can't/don't use
it much because we don't have the resources to make it work. Disk space,
training, etc. It is a very powerful tool. Now that some other issues are
out of the way it will be a hot topic this year. I am looking forward to
making it work for us. Making it work is part of our business plan for this
year.

My advice is do not under estimate the time and training it will take to
learn to use the tool. I had Epicor help me install and set it up to
refresh at night. This is essential in my opinion. We don't have a full
time IT person and setting it up even with help had some ups and downs. It
did work and the Epicor tech was first class.

If you don't make it a priority and devote some serious resources you will
end up with an expensive paper weight.

Sincerely,

Mitchell Kirby

We have had VBI for quite awhile and have never been able to use it. 90%
self inflicted. I am still convinved it will be one of our three major
tools for reporting with 8.0 and the loss of RB. I went to the CorVu
classes (CorBusiness and Administrator) and saqw great potential but have
never been able to implement it here. First reason was an incompatibility
with our, then, NT 4.0 Vantage server and the difficulty locating the
dynamart files on another server. Then when we got that working (we being
me and Epicor consultants) it consumed the entire free space on that server.
As neas as I can tell the VBI data will take 1.5X to 2X the size of the
Vantage DB. So prepare to allow for a lot of extra space. Due to network
speed too it can take a long time to build if on another server. Best
option would be to have a Vantage server with LOTS of free disk space and
build the dynamart overnight right on that server. Probably the way Epicor
assumes it will be done, which is why I figure our issues are self
inflicted.

It's an amazingly powerful tool when it all works well. Looking at it I
would say it is no more difficult to learn than Crystal and for some tasks
far more powerful. Each tool has its niche. Plus there is a CorVu
YahooGroup for real-world help and it seems most of the people on it are
Vantage users who are familiar with the Vantage DB.

We are contemplating the purchase of VBI and are interested in other
people's experiences (good and bad). We are looking for the increased
robustness in reporting and don't want to have to hire an outside
consultant each time we need a new report.

I recall at Perspectives some negative comments regarding VBI but
can't remember what. Database size, support, customization??? Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

Epicor Delivers Competitive Advantage to Midmarket Manufacturers Through
Enhanced Real-Time Analytics
Vantage Business Intelligence With Pre-configured Datamarts, Web Deployment,
And Key Performance Indicators Provides Enterprise-Wide Access To
Information at Lower Cost
CHICAGO, March 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- National Manufacturing Week
(Booth #3605) - Providing greater access to information and additional
resources to improve business performance for midmarket manufacturers,
Epicor Software Corporation (Nasdaq: EPIC
<http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=epic&d=t> - news
<http://biz.yahoo.com/n/e/epic.html>) today announced enhancements to
Vantage, its comprehensive, integrated manufacturing solution, with the
latest version of Vantage Business Intelligence. With Vantage Business
Intelligence, manufacturers are able to access, explore and analyze data
residing within the Vantage solution, to gain the knowledge needed to make
better-informed business decisions. Because much of the information is
pre-built, companies are able to start seeing a return on their investment
in Vantage Business Intelligence faster than with traditional business
intelligence solutions. Epicor is a leading provider of enterprise,
eBusiness and collaborative commerce software solutions for midmarket
companies. (Photo: <http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/19990503/LAM021> )
Vantage Business Intelligence allows manufacturers to fully utilize the
powerful information generated by automating their business operations with
a comprehensive software solution like Vantage. Traditionally, business
intelligence was reserved for executive-level users within an organization.
With Vantage Business Intelligence, users throughout the enterprise at every
level are empowered with up to the minute relevant information to be able to
answer complex business challenges. Vantage Business Intelligence gives
manufacturers the tools to analyze trends, patterns and relationships found
within the data that are vital to making informed decisions.
Circuit Check, a builder of circuit board test equipment, and a Vantage
customer since 1996, is deploying Vantage Business Intelligence to gain
further insight into business operations. ``Our business requires faster,
more effective decision making tools, and current report writers simply
aren't complex enough to fill that need,'' said Alex Neutgens, controller
for Circuit Check. ``Vantage Business Intelligence not only gives us
increased functionality with drill down capabilities to find specific data
and a direct interface with the Vantage database, but also saves time by
allowing us to put all the information we want into one report instead of
having to run multiple reports.''
Hydromat, Inc. is a recognized global leader in precision transfer machine
technology. Since 1997, Epicor's Vantage solution has helped Hydromat's
production capabilities keep pace as the company has grown. ``We need a tool
that will allow us to merge data from other databases with Vantage, and
provide secure in depth data to the right people,'' said Shawn Sims,
business applications manager for Hydromat. ``With Vantage Business
Intelligence we can pull data from anywhere within Vantage, and deliver it
in real-time to the desktops of upper level executives. This quick and easy
access to the information they need enables them to more efficiently monitor
the effectiveness of our business processes.''
Real-Time Business Intelligence Analysis
Vantage Business Intelligence provides companies the ability to perform
complex queries and analysis to obtain the answers to real world business
problems while keeping implementation costs to a minimum. Epicor's Datamarts
provide quick deployment by integrating supply chain information from sales,
production, inventory, shipping and financials to pre-built queries,
reports, and analysis tools. The Datamarts' ability to drill down on
specific data is critical to measuring key performance indicators such as
cash flow analysis, shipping and vendor performance, and sales analysis; all
essential components of a company's effectiveness and viability. A recent
report on enabling technologies from AMR Research found that implementation
times decrease by 50% when pre-built systems, reports and data models are
used.
Other key elements of Vantage Business Intelligence include an easy-to-use
query tool, quick reports, executive alerts, what-if analysis capabilities
and a balanced scorecard. The solution also includes an administration
component, which handles scheduling; and, the server, which allows for
interactive Web deployment and server-based scheduling. Together, these
components help to increase a company's overall productivity by supplying
users with the information necessary to make proactive decisions regarding
their business.
``In today's economy, business intelligence is no longer an amenity, but a
requirement for survival. The more a company knows about itself, the better
they can position themselves for success,'' said Nancy Brehmer, senior
product marketing manager for Epicor's Manufacturing Solutions Group.
``Vantage allows a company to view and analyze its key business processes in
real-time, enabling them to make quicker, more informed decisions to further
drive business growth and operational efficiency.''
Easy to use and quick to implement, Vantage enables make-to-order
manufacturers to make the most of their constrained resources. Because of
the dynamic production requirements characteristic of make-to-order
manufacturing organizations, Vantage provides particularly strong scheduling
and online information access capabilities. Vantage's graphical scheduling
tools and ``what if'' simulation features empower users to make realistic
production schedules, execute them efficiently with the resources currently
available, and react quickly and efficiently to schedule changes.

A great looking product I would love to try using but a bit out of our reach
price wise. I'm waiting to see if they adjust the pricing strategy. It
certainly looks like an interesting tool and I bet I could do wonderful
things with it but for now RB, Crystal and Access will have to suffice.
Check with your account rep - your price and/or sense of affordability could
be different. If anyone actually buys this I would love to hear a
"real-world" review of it.

We purchased Corvu. The pricing is a little high, but from what I have
seen, it will be worth it. We are putting a lot of faith in it improving
reporting and efficiency. We had a good demo by Epicor with our data and
it seemed to perform very well. By the way, it is about the only piece of
"equipment" that we have purchased in the last 9 months, so it needs to
perform.

I am hoping to have it installed in 2 weeks (if our IT dept can get around
to it). I will let the list know my opinion of it when I have a good grasp
of what it can do (in reality).

Am looking for comments on this module.
I think there were some a few weeks ago yet I thought most of the comments
were....
less than serious.

Who is using it?
How useful are canned reports?
Yes, it provides another tool for building reports but I already have:
Crystal, Report Builder & 'Financial Report Designer'
Is this an improvement?

How difficult is it to unstall VBI / Corvu? The card with the CD

Even with their help installing it (twice) it is still not working right. It may be site specific but the nightly regeneration of the dynamarts would not run. Now that we are on 6.1 I am sure there are a whole bunch more things that have to be changed (DB location being one). From what I have seen the install process is fairly complicated and frought with easy to make mistakes. I have not taken the Admin class from CorVu yet but suspect that it would make some of the "why is this being done?" questions easier to answer. Without an understanding of how it all works it becomes so much voodoo.

One side issue in the inability to get the nightly stuff to run was that they had partial success after moving the CorVu part to our Win2K email server and having it pull the data over from the Vantage DB - rathern than all running on the Win-NT Vantage server. Something about NT was really not liking the automatic login process required by the nightly update. It is little frustrations like this that have made VBI really tough to deal with despite the promise of it being our future mainstay reporting tool.

As far as their recommending help... unless you are really smart with this sort of stuff and have an idea how it works internally I think it would be mandatory to get help. Too bad when they sell it they don't explain this extra cost up front. Fortunately they can do a lot of it remotely via WebEx.

Just curious if anyone on the Vantage list has filed their W2 information
electronically before. Since we have over 250 employees the CFO is telling
me we must send this information via magnet media to the Feds.

Any input would be helpful at this point.

I have done this many times. Last year was the first year with Vantage, and
it's easy. In the W-2 screen, you Export W-2 file and it creates a file to
submit. The last couple of years I have imported it into the SSA website
and not even had to mail anything in. I'd be happy to help you through it.
You do have to register with the SSA first in order to do it though.

I would have to agree with Todd. I purchased the install help as soon as I
read the instructions. We also had major problems with the install. Tech
support earned the two hours of installation I paid for. Money well spent.

I was not around when the install occured, however, we did have the
onsite help. From what I understand it's rather compicated and
a "good" purchase?

On this topic for those using Covu, have any of you looked into using
Hypervu or the Webkit add-ons by Corvu? I would like to know how to
push this data from Corvu to my clients in other methods than the
Corvu interface.

Also, I was under the understanding that Corvu had to be installed on
the same server as Vantage, however, reading the thread it seem that
it can be installed on another server.????

Regards,

Jeremey Havrilla

We are contemplating the purchase of VBI and are interested in other
people's experiences (good and bad). We are looking for the increased
robustness in reporting and don't want to have to hire an outside
consultant each time we need a new report.

I recall at Perspectives some negative comments regarding VBI but
can't remember what. Database size, support, customization??? Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I am very pro the VBI suite. It is expensive. We are on V6.1 and to be
honest it was one the big wins.

It comes with some standard reports, depending on your company, will
be useful. We started the implementation of VBI from a management
reporting point of view. I looked at it very simply, you have all this
information is vantage, and sometimes it is very difficult to get it
out in a format which is suitable. V6.1 standard isn't the best.

We never used it for shop-floor or customer facing documentation. It
was for reporting. In end the end we had corvu generate reports for
the intranet and daily reports for the shopfloor. Because corvu
extracts virtually the whole database and combined with the standard
reports it is quite easy to develope new custom reports.

I have heard that if you have a very large database then there are
issues but I think these have been resolved. In terms of
customisation, I believe it is quite easy. I believe that if you want
to write a management report in corvu, 80% of cases, it would be
substantially easier than in crystal from my experience. You do need
some database knowledge.

It is not the best tool, for example, to create a modified invoice
form but this is not what it is for.

In terms of support, in the uk, it has been great.

We have had VBI for quite awhile and have never been able to use it. 90% self inflicted. I am still convinved it will be one of our three major tools for reporting with 8.0 and the loss of RB. I went to the CorVu classes (CorBusiness and Administrator) and saqw great potential but have never been able to implement it here. First reason was an incompatibility with our, then, NT 4.0 Vantage server and the difficulty locating the dynamart files on another server. Then when we got that working (we being me and Epicor consultants) it consumed the entire free space on that server. As neas as I can tell the VBI data will take 1.5X to 2X the size of the Vantage DB. So prepare to allow for a lot of extra space. Due to network speed too it can take a long time to build if on another server. Best option would be to have a Vantage server with LOTS of free disk space and build the dynamart overnight right on that server. Probably the way Epicor assumes it will be done, which is why I figure our issues are self inflicted.

It's an amazingly powerful tool when it all works well. Looking at it I would say it is no more difficult to learn than Crystal and for some tasks far more powerful. Each tool has its niche. Plus there is a CorVu YahooGroup for real-world help and it seems most of the people on it are Vantage users who are familiar with the Vantage DB.
