VBI - Installation Questions

>"It was never mentioned pre-sale that this isn't something I can install
myself or that there would be additional costs."

This seems typical of Epicor. They seem to be the only company I know of
that will sell you software with a bug, problem or just won't work the way
they said it would, then charge you for a patch to fix it and call it an
enhancement. Even Microsoft has all their service patches available to the
open public for free download.

>"is this something I can install myself?"

Yes you can install it yourself. It's hard to do though with the poor if
any install instructions. I was sent three different sets of instructions,
none of which were 100% accurate. Took about a day of playing around to get
it installed. Anytime I had a problem with it, it seems they would tell me
they will follow up with me in a few days. Last time I talked to them was
back around Oct 2002 when planning on the 5.2 upgrade I contacted them about
upgrading the 5.1 to 5.2 VBI. David Weiseth sent me a list of files to
download, again with very poor documentation and "I will give you a call to
follow up on the process." (I'm still waiting for that follow up call)

>"is using VBI learnable on the fly or is attending a class absolutely
required?"

Hard to say, guess it could be. I took a class and learned a lot more in a
shorter period of time. Would highly recommend taking a class.

>"I assume it must be installed on the Vantage server."

Don't know about this, ours is installed at the server.

>"Will the isntall require a reboot?"

Don't remember if it does. Installed this almost 2 yrs ago and still don't
really use it like it should be.
We purchased VBI a couple weeks back and boss is on me to start using it. First I have to get it installed and there was zero in the way of documentation for it especially for getting started. I have found the CorVu documentation CD and printed that but nothing about using with Vantage. There was a pitch from Vantage Support for setting up an appointment for them to install it (for $$) but nothing else. It was never mentioned pre-sale that this isn't something I can install myself or that there would be additional costs.

So, for those already using it; is this something I can install myself? Relatively quickly or smoothly? If it is going to take days of hair pulling I'll go ahead and have Epicor do it but by doing it myself I think I will understand it better as I am using it. Speaking of which - is using VBI learnable on the fly or is attending a class absolutely required?

Also, I assume it must be installed on the Vantage server. Will the isntall require a reboot? If so I must schedule for a weekend. But without an install guide I can't even determine this much.

Todd,

To be honest with you, VBI is a pain to install because of the lack and
confusion with the installation instructions. I have a pdf from Epicor
on installing that I can send you offline. VBI is hard to use and isn't
what I thought we were buying when we did it. I have taken one class and
truly it's something you have to spend a lot of time on.

VBI is my major project for the rest of year. Haven't installed the
upgrade for 6.0 to see what changes there are.

Thanks very much for the instructions (off-list). I am thinking more and more that for $250 I'll let Epicor install it. It will cost way too much in terms of my time and may cause more headaches later. If they do it and it does not work then support will have no excuse to not fix it.

Interesesting about it not being what you expected. Same happened to me when we bought EBI and were never able to use it. After that debacle I am really unde the gun to make this one work.

I am planning on taking the eLearning classes and the intro at Perspectives but may have to do the classroom as well if offered sometime in Mpls.

Thanks again,
-Todd C.
