After attending Perspectives, I have scaled back my expectations
somewhat on the brave new world of XML based reporting. The
development group has expanded the data that they are making
available via XML files, trying to address as much of the missing
data that folks rely on subreports to deliver today. They are also
intending to provide the ability to add fields to the XML files that
we will get out of the box. I came back less excited because the
utility/functionality to add fields to the XML files wasn't done
baking yet (no User Interface built). Also, there will be limitations
as to what tables can be candidates for XML extraction. I would
prefer the ability to pull data from any table that I want. It is
possible that V8 will provide access to all the data that we need and
my concerns are unfounded. Time will tell.

Will adding crystal reports to the vantage menu be as simple as adding report builder reports?

Will you be required to setup ODBC User or File DSN's on every computer?

Will you be required to enter in the Progress SQL92 driver password every time you run a report?

My understanding was that for the users to use the "distributed" DLLs that run the reports without ODBC (against the Vantage database) the special CR 10 Pro from Epicor would be required. Also, special version will run against only the Vantage database(s). But....the menus should allow other versions of CR reports to run - in which case the ODBC part would be required (with password) on the client as would a license for that version CR. The nice thing about the Epicor version is the substantial cost reduction over putting CR licenses on every desk.

At least, that what my scribbled notes from Perspectives tell me.

Todd,

What I was told in Vegas was that all reports on V8 will run through XLM.
Also, they say that you could create your own for custom reports. I believe
they might not have this clear at this point. You could run reports using
ODBC and Crystal (Vantage 6.1). The issues are:

1. You need to modify your .mfg file to have the login information
2. It will not use a license if run within Vantage
3. What about waiting a see if this XML thing is what they will
implement.

Since RB is going, I am looking at V8 almost as a new implementation. The
screens and all look so different too.

Or XML rather? Yes, the "canned" Vantage reports will be driven from XML files rather than the DBF files in 6.10 and earlier. There is a way to add any field you want to the XML file - so no more ODBC in subreports if a field you want is not available in the file. This is huge. No more requirement for the user to have ODBC and no more hassle with the login (or modifying the .mfg file) just because you needed an extra field on the Job Traveler.

Yes, I heard too that creating custom reports (as in to replace RB) was part of the deal. The CR 10 they sell for Vantage has a full developer version. My understanding was that it hooks directly to the database without ODBC and the user's can run the reports without having the whole CR developer program loaded on their PC. It is this direct to the DB part that would make this version useless for reporting against, for instance, an Access DB or some other system.

So it looks like they are providing a useful alternative to RB - in addition to the extremely powerful Dashboard capabilities that can replace many simple RB reports. I spoke to one of the early adopters and they said converting all their RB reports actually went fairly fast once they got rolling - especially with a tool they wrote to figure out which reports were really on menus versus the "one off" reports that could wait until they are actually needed again (maybe never).

Todd,
If I am not mistaken, the "direct into the database" is using the web
services (I understand nothing reaches into the DB directly in 8.0). If
that is the case, a reasonably adept web developer should be able to write
web reports that draw from the same source the Vantage code does (web
services).
This again will be huge. But as you mentioned the ability to modify the
"data sets" that lie within the canned reports and create your own will be
the best.

Or XML rather? Yes, the "canned" Vantage reports will be driven from XML
files rather than the DBF files in 6.10 and earlier. There is a way to add
any field you want to the XML file - so no more ODBC in subreports if a
field you want is not available in the file. This is huge. No more
requirement for the user to have ODBC and no more hassle with the login (or
modifying the .mfg file) just because you needed an extra field on the Job
Traveler.

Yes, I heard too that creating custom reports (as in to replace RB) was part
of the deal. The CR 10 they sell for Vantage has a full developer version.
My understanding was that it hooks directly to the database without ODBC and
the user's can run the reports without having the whole CR developer program
loaded on their PC. It is this direct to the DB part that would make this
version useless for reporting against, for instance, an Access DB or some
other system.

So it looks like they are providing a useful alternative to RB - in addition
to the extremely powerful Dashboard capabilities that can replace many
simple RB reports. I spoke to one of the early adopters and they said
converting all their RB reports actually went fairly fast once they got
rolling - especially with a tool they wrote to figure out which reports were
really on menus versus the "one off" reports that could wait until they are
actually needed again (maybe never).

What I was told in Vegas was that all reports on V8 will run through XLM.
Also, they say that you could create your own for custom reports. I believe
they might not have this clear at this point. You could run reports using
ODBC and Crystal (Vantage 6.1). The issues are:

1. You need to modify your .mfg file to have the login information
2. It will not use a license if run within Vantage
3. What about waiting a see if this XML thing is what they will
implement.

Since RB is going, I am looking at V8 almost as a new implementation. The
screens and all look so different too.

I asked if they have modified one of the canned XML's to create their own
(they didn't). My impression of the deal is that they would need to work
really hard to release V8 at the end of December (aprox. Date? Anyone?)
