What about V6 to E9? Convert data or use DMT to populate?

My recommendation is to re-implement using DMT and Paste Insert on basic tables.

During trials we had Epicor upgrade our DB which was only using v6.1 AP, GL and CRM. They couldn't even get that to work right. Company config was locked out, so were currencies and UoMs. Numerous other problems and bugs.

Half way thru the accounts training our accountants were shaking their heads saying it was unworkable.

We've re-created everything from scratch and everything is working a lot better but testing started on 9.04 and upgraded thru most versions to 9.05.694a and even these upgrades caused problems. Therefore we have created a fresh install on 9.05.606 for our user testing to ensure we bring along as few problems as possible.

We are on Vantage 6.0 and plan on converting to Epicor 9.xx when we feel like they finally have their act together. We've been working with Epicor to load our current data into E9 and continue to hear from them that certain things don't work in E9 because of our data.

I am wondering if it makes sense to load what we can using the DMT tool and start from scratch with the rest of the data.

Anybody else go from V6 to E9 who can weigh in?

Personally I feel anything older than version 8.03 should be a
re-implementation. There has been so much change from 6 to 8 in itself.
And then compounded with the changes in 9? Why waste the time?

Yes everyone will moan and groan, but think of it as an opportunity to
"re-train" how the new version works. You are bound to find you may
have to tweak your business processes. Especially with the new
customizations, BPMs, and BAQ's you can utilize.

I always thought re-implementation was overkill but lately I've been reconsidering.
It is not easy to compare upgrade/convert/imports vs. a fresh implementation. Or when one approach really becomes faster/cheaper/better.

I do notice more "knowledge" gaps with the upgrades.

Can you share which "certain things" don't work because of your data? We
are on version 6.1 and are looking at this also.

I have always tried to do a "quick" train for people about a week or two
before the actual upgrade. That way they are aware of some differences.
But that said, people always manage to find the exceptions after the
"quick" training and that is where things can get hectic because people
want answers right away.

You have to accept that you will never be able to plan everything, but
the more you know the better the process can be.
