Tim,
We upgraded from 6.1 to 8.0 then quickly to 8.3x earlier this year. I
strongly recommend you perform a dump and load on your live 6.1 database
before trying to convert to 8x. The conversion process took about twenty
hours for us to complete before we did the dump and load on 6.1. After
that, it took less than two hours.

We are in the same boat; currently using V6 looking to go E9. I have
been told that it is easiest to upgrade to V8.3 before going to E9 and
that BOM, assemblies and other inventory and cost issues are the biggest
headaches.
We haven't done any cost/benefit analysis of making the jump. There are
a few whistles and bells that E9 has that are attractive but not sure
worth the cost.

system back up and running under version 9 or even 8.
you were able to address any data or master files which youu considered
obsolete.

our current version 6.1. Over the years our database has become somewhat
cluttered with old data and master files that we would prefer to remove,
