Tim,

We upgraded from 6.1 to 8.0 then quickly to 8.3x earlier this year. I
strongly recommend you perform a dump and load on your live 6.1 database
before trying to convert to 8x. The conversion process took about twenty
hours for us to complete before we did the dump and load on 6.1. After
that, it took less than two hours.

We are in the same boat; currently using V6 looking to go E9. I have
been told that it is easiest to upgrade to V8.3 before going to E9 and
that BOM, assemblies and other inventory and cost issues are the biggest
headaches.

We haven't done any cost/benefit analysis of making the jump. There are
a few whistles and bells that E9 has that are attractive but not sure
worth the cost.

We have been using Vantage for approximately 12 years from version 3 to
our current version 6.1. Over the years our database has become somewhat
cluttered with old data and master files that we would prefer to remove,
so our current plan at this point is to convert with Epicor's assistance
by performing a "master table only" conversion and a reimplementation
process. If you company has taken a similar approach and has performed a
like conversion, I would be interested in hearing any pitfalls, issues,
or unforeseen resource requirements that were necessary to get your
system back up and running under version 9 or even 8.

We were on our legacy system for about 10 years before briefly moving to Vantage 8 then to Epicor 9.

We took a different approach. We have thousands or customers/suspects/prospects/parts etc.

Because Vantage 8 was going to be new to us and a lot of the data like you say becomes cluttered and un-necessary, we decided the best approach for our company was to manuall input every single detail.

This included inputting every single customer's detail and contact - This was extremely beneficial as before we added any customers and in particular contacts, we called them first to make sure the details were all up to date. We have about 100,000 contacts on our legacy system.

Its amazing how 'out of date' our legacy data was. nearly every single company had new contacts and contacts had left. This meant that for years we had been sending promotional literature and samples to people who didnt even work at those companies anymore. So although it sounds labourious (which it is), it is very fruitful. We have saved a lot of money as we now have the correct contact names, but it has also been fruitful as we have gained new business from 'new' contacts who hadn't previously heard of our company.

With regards to BOMs, routes and parts, they were again all input manually. With the BOMs we improved most of our methods as we went so things are more standardised and improved efficiciency in the manufacture of our products.

In a nutshell, we have gained greatly by manually entering everthing.

Between Vantage 8 and Epicor 9, the data was taken on with data conversion. The majority was successful but we have encountered performance issues in certain areas which means that in some ares the system is slower than it should be.

It's not just easiest, it's required to upgrade your database to
8.03.4xx before upgrading it to 9. Also, later versions of 4xx are
probably better as some of the 4xx patch changelogs have mentioned
things about getting data ready for the 9 conversion.
