Our production planner has found its faster for him if he makes all jobs as build to stock so we have been doing this. The problem we have found is parts marked nonstock result in jobs with make direct set. So although we may have already built boards and they are in stock we get mrp suggestions to build more.
As a solution I was going to explain to him this problem, and ask that he build board to the job for nonstock parts to avoid this problem but thought if we don’t mark any parts as nonstock that would be a viable option as well. So my question what is the value of marking parts as nonstock?
Please keep in mind in reality we have parts we stock and custom parts we don’t stock, so keeping track of which is which is valuable but other than this what is the value?
The custom part versus stock part is the reason for the part master and part plant nonstock field.
If you have nonstock parts being ordered then the job can be made right from the order with the order job wizard option. This same function is on the Planning Workbench.
Think of nonstock parts as being hard allocated to the sales order (or parent job) automatically and bypassing inventory.
There are some definite pros and cons depending on your products and order process.
