Windows Connections

Mark,
I would agree and point out a similar solution.

A Linksys NSLU2 is a ~$80 device that you can hang 2 USB hard drives off. I
have 2 that I use. The cool part about this device is that there are
alternative firmware versions available
(http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/Main/HomePage) that open the Linux OS on
this device (with their own very active Yahoo Group).
I have one plugged in using the second drive as a backup of the first. It
acts as a simple network file server, as well as my FTP server to the
internet. I have a second that sits at my home on the other end of a VPN
doing automated nightly backup of our roughly 20GB of critical data
(including our Vantage backup file) (Using Linux Rsync this takes about 40
mins to sync the files at 2AM).
It's a really slick, relatively cheap solution that is basically Plug and
Play, with tons of expansion abilities as you start to explore the Linux OS.
Good luck,
Aaron Hoyt

Another option is to forgo the computer completely and use network attached
storage (NAS) from companies like Snap Appliance, Linksys, Western Digital
among many others. This is just a disc drive attached to the network and you
map a drive letter just like a PC. They come as single drives or with RAID
configurations and some even have tape backup units as well as VPN access.

Here's a couple of places for higher end solutions:

Apologies in advance for what may be a dumb question:

We have a Win98 PC on our network which we use as a 'library'. A number of
networked PCs (c.20) have a drive mapped to access this PC to pick up common
reference documents. Occasionally we get a Windows error stating "No more
connections can be made to this remote computer....already as many
connections as the computer can accept".

Question is, where is this limit held and can the configuration be changed
to allow more PCs to access?

Thanks in advance for any/all advice

Richard

Hi Richard,

I know on NT(client) there was a limit of 14 connections at any one
time. This is probably true of 98 as well. This is a difference
between server and clients operating systems.

Don't know if there is a hack around. There wasn't for NT. Sorry
can't be of more help.

I think that Win98 is fairly limited on remote connection handling. One
feasible solution would to just make a cheap XP workstation that can
handle what you need. If the current one is on 98, you should see
overall performance gains as well. It would even be possible to nab the
hard drive out of the current system and slave it to an XP machine,
remap shares (login.bat, or whatever you are using to define
directories), thereby circumventing the inevitable recreation of the
directory structures.

I know upgrade is always the easy way out, but in this case you may see
more benefits than superficial.

Good Luck,
Brian

Unfortunately, XP pro has a limit of 10 incoming connections, Home Edition
is only 5. So I'm not sure how much better off you would be.

Richard,

Depending on how you are using this library system one of the things you
could do is install PWS (Personal Web Server) and host the documents that
the employees need. Doing so is still limited by the 10 simultaneous user
limit, but since http is "connectionless," a connection is granted only
during the load of the page and the accessing of the document. As soon as
those are complete, the connection is released back to the pool. When you
map a drive letter persistently, you are grabbing a connection and holding
it basically forever. The employees can access the documents via web
browser and if necessary upload changes if that is their responsibility.
Obviously, a little training will be necessary.

Or you could install Linux with Samba and support unlimited connections
without anyone noticing the difference, except you (and your wallet).

Have fun,

Charles

Haven't quite decided the way to go but plenty of food for thought!
Thanks again

Why don't you just install Linux on the box and use it as a file server?

Really, Linux probably is the best way to go. Even if you aren't
familiar with it, this project would be easy enough to learn the ropes
on. Can't beat the price.

Thanks to the person who pointed out the XP limitation. I guess I never
hit the 10 due to strict timeouts. Went to Server03 before I ever
realized that it was so stifled.
