That is very interesting. So both Vantage and Worldship read and write to
the Access DB. How about using a User Defined Table to do this instead of
Access.

UPS was very helpful in setting up the similar scenario. We have an Access
ODBC query based on the Ship head table. The best thing is when a shipment
goes from Ground to Next Day AM during the day, we missed a couple in the
past. But now its updated as soon as Sales makes the change on the SO. A
very high ROI.
Currently, we paste in the tracking number manually. I should look into a
barcode scanner.

Talk to your UPS account manager and tell them that you need someone to use
crossware to import information from your database. We use the packing slip
number from the ship head table to pass the information through. They can
use that to get to the ship detail so you have the order information. We
worked with a Robert Dzierwa but they have others a UPS that do this as
well. It actually works pretty slick and it didn't cost us a dime. You will
have to provide them with some information but they can install and get you
up and running all remotely.

Last year there was a series of posts dealing with integrating
Worldship and Vantage. I just completed a meeting with UPS and it
sounds like pulling data from Vantage to Worldship is not an issue by
using the Keyed Import feature of Worldship. Problem is, is that the
Keyed Import keys on one field to pull data from Vantage to Worldship.

as far as mapping Vantage fields to Worldship fields. Creating the
map through Worldship Connection Wizard is easy enough, I am seeing
the Vantage Tables and Fields.

this. Was wondering how you are doing and how you made it work.

Is anyone else doing this and what was your solution.

I am on 8.00.809g with Progress. Planning on patching up to 8.00.810c
this weekend. Does 8.03 with Pack Out and Manifest Information at the
Order Level work better?

We are almost finished with this and this is what we did:

We created a SQL database table with the names of the fields that WorldShip
uses. One field is the key and I do exactly what you suggest. The key is the
OrderNum-Line-Release. I wrote a routine in VB.Net that takes the OrderNum as
a parameter. It checks to see if any of the lines are shipped via UPS. If so,
it deletes the current records (if any) and then it writes a record for each
release. Yeah, they may all be the same but this made life a bit easier.

A few "gotcha's":

- We used one of the user-defined fields in the ShipVia table to hold the UPS
shipping method code. (We just upgraded to WorldShip 9 and there are now codes
not just descriptions).

- You can't really calculate the dollar value for insured amount or COD unless
the entire order is shipping at once.

- We linked to the Country table to get the ISO country codes that UPS likes.

- Non-domestic shipments required a contact name and phone number.

- You really need to standardize your entry of addresses to make sure the
right lines go to the correct field. UPS addresses want the street address
first followed by a department/attention line. Remember that many foreign
countries use Postal Codes and you should include them.

- Many Vantage fields can be larger than UPS fields, so you'll want to check
data lengths before updating.

- The manifest fields in 8.03 don't propagate header items down to releases
unless you have AdvanceShip (but then you wouldn't be doing this exercise if
you did), so you have to mimic that behavior or customize Order Entry.

Currently, this is a standalone program but we will make it a web service so
that whenever a sales order is saved, it will call the web service (async)
with the specific order number so it can update the SQL table. I will also add
a button to Order Entry to give the user a means of forcing an update.
Currently, we run a query and update all in batch since rush orders here are
several days (except parts of course...).

I am working with Insite to get Express Ship working with Vantage 6.1. They
wrote the package and they know how to set it up and how to work with UPS to
take the place of World Ship. We have been on World Ship for a long time.
Express Ship has some limitations compared to Advanced Ship. I am not fully
set up yet but I have a high confidence level based on the expertise of the
people I have worked with at Insite so far. Choose carefully between the
two. We will probably end up on Advanced Ship.



The bad news is Epicor tech support is not qualified (based on my limited
experience, sample size of one) to install and/or implement either package.
If you go this route demand to work with Insite direct. I bit the bullet in
my case but on a new install you have more leverage. Try to get Epicor to
pay for the consulting from Insite.



I started with UPS years ago and they were willing to help integrate World
Ship with Vantage. It got too complicated for our limited expertise. We
delayed the install when Express Ship was announced. It was supposed to
work with 6.0 so we upgraded. Instead it was released with 6.1 and we had
to upgrade again. That upgrade required a hardware upgrade. The project
got pushed back over and over again. We got into it hot and heavy again at
the end of 2006 and ran into many problems. I made very limited progress
until I asked for help from Epicor management. At that point Insite took
over. We are making steady progress. I expect to switch to Express Ship
soon.



I have had very good experiences with Epicor tech support in the past. This
was not one of them. Keep that in mind if you choose to go this route.

We create the packing slip in vantage. Then before we print we run the
package through UPS worldship and use crossware to fill in the shipping
data. Add any additional handling or anything that may be needed for that
shipment(insurance) then when we process the shipment and at that point it
will send back to vantage the tracking number and put in the tracking number
on the header. If there are multiple tracking numbers we scan them into the
comments on the line level. Costs are not imported at this point. Shipping
adds the costs and then we print the packing slip and flag as shipped so it
can be invoiced.

We don't use any integration with Worldship (yet)...but once the UPS label is printed from Worldship our people go to the tracking number field in Vantage and scan the label's barcode in with a keyboard in-line scanner. Assures no key-in errors and is easy enough that they actually do it. Great for the Cust Service people when a customer calls and they can track it from Vantage.

We were doing that but we keep our shipping dept very thin in staff so I
customized the Picking Ticket to print both a Picking Ticket and a Packing
Slip at the same time. This way our Shipping Dept. does not have to actually
do Customer Shipment Entry. The Shipping Doc Label is affixed to the Picking
Ticket and moved to A/R. A/R then actual does Customer Shipment after it has
the Picking Ticket with the Shipping Doc.

Obviously our Packing Slip does not have Packing Slip control number but
what does the customer care, if he calls in he is referencing a PO Number or
Order Number anyway.

So unfortunately the Shipping Doc Label from UPS does not print a Bar Code
so the A/R person is manually entering the Tracking number. So the next
challenge is to have the Tracking Number write back to the proper Pack Slip
after the Order has process through Customer Shipment Entry.

I am curious. I have heard some things about Service Connect to automate
things like this (I am looking to do some EDI integration also). Anyone
using Service Connect and would that help in this situation since using it
doesn't break any Epicor rules about writing data to the database from an
outside source.

We don't use any integration with Worldship (yet)...but once the UPS label
is printed from Worldship our people go to the tracking number field in
Vantage and scan the label's barcode in with a keyboard in-line scanner.
Assures no key-in errors and is easy enough that they actually do it. Great
for the Cust Service people when a customer calls and they can track it from
Vantage.
