3 to 4 to 5

Todd:

My JT is quite modified. From 4 to 5 (using CR v8) it wasn't a big problem. I did take the opportunity to change it around again, but it was pretty easy. A few fields have been replaced but they were easy to figure out. I think they had added "our" to the newer fields.

Rick,
About your Crystal forms changes. Did you have to re-do them to the 5.0
version or could you take your modified report from earlier version and fix
just the database links/fields. I have a massively changed Job Traveler I
would rather not have to do it over.

Well, I changed servers at the same time which may have contributed to my
hassles. But I did have several tense moments of a blustery March Saturday
and was thankful to have Ben to talk to at Vantage Tech Support. Also, make
sure you have all your needed patches handy as well.

Also, I had very extensive forms changes (Crystal) which added to the
hassles as well as updating the CR itself.

Again, as I said, I think you'll be fine if you have all your "ducks in a

Really? I've done the 3 to 4 to 5 conversion on a test server three
times.
Each time the 3 to 4 conversion went off without a hitch but two out of
three conversions from 4 to 5 failed during the schema changes.

I think Troy mentioned to install the clients and change report builder
reports using the test environment so it is done before going live.
Correct
me if I'm wrong, but your test environment would either have to be on the
same server as you are planning to run 5 live. Ours is not, so I don't
think I can do that, however I'm planning a "pre-live" conversion on our
production server just to test out conversion times and find problems.

Ok, I'm ready to take the plunge. I'm gonna finally get off of 3.0
and go to 5.0. Someone suggested setting up a stand alone unit,
installing 3,4,5, and doing a practice run on it. Seems like overkill
to me. Has anybody done this, or would you agree that a test run on
the server (test environment) is sufficient? Any major issues with
doing the 3-4-5 conversion? Tips? Anybody want to talk me out of
this? :-) Les
Definitely go through the conversion "on the side" somewhere for practice. I would think on the server would be sufficient. I am, however, in the process of evaluating and testing whether perhaps a "power" PC (in the 800mhz to 1ghz range) might do the conversions for 5.1 faster than our dual 450mhz server. If so, for our next conversion I would download the database to that PC and do the conversion there, then put the results back on the server live.

We did the 3 to 4 to 5 conversion back in July. A dump and Load at the 3 or 4 stage would be recommended also.

If you have the time and resources, do it offline. I did 3 to 4 at least
two times and have done 4 to 5 three times, the third time on the server
running 4. That gives me a good handle on what to expect in terms of time
and any gotchas. I'm planning on going live with 5 (no pun intended)
sometime in the next two weeks.

No amount of practice of this type should be viewed as overkill.

A Tip> If you already have 5.0 on a test environment, then go ahead and begin installing the 5.0 client on all workstations BEFORE the conversion weekend. Also modify all your report builder and crystal reports before hand as well (you'll need a dedicated PC for ODBC to do this as you can't have ODBC for 5.0 and 3.0 running the same PC at the same time).

All this will save you LOTS of time on the conversion weekend and will make it more peaceful, hopefully.

Odds are you will have to redo it. But you can try just changing the links/fields first.

What happens in a new release is that often the .DBF files that these reports use are changed considerably, including field names. In 5.0 (or maybe 4.0, I don't know because we skipped it), there were a lot of language fields added to the .DBF's.

What makes starting from scratch a bit easier (in Crystal) is to have your existing modified report open, and also open your New 5.0 report side by side. You can copy and paste fields between them (especially formula's) and they will go across fine. That way you can guage formatting spaces also a little better. If you refresh and save often, Crystal will tell you if a field you copied is no longer available.

When we moved to 5.0, many reports converted fine, but our highly modifed POForm was, unfortunately, not one of them.

Our plan was to install 5.0 test in the same place that the LIVE database was going to be. That way all the client installs and reports were pointing in the right place for the conversion. Saves having to redo everything once you've done the conversion.

It shouldn't matter if you use the same drive, different drives, or different servers. AS long as you install 5.0 where it's going to ultimately reside, you wouldn't have to reinstall Progress/Vantage on the server, nor would you have to reinstall any of the clients.

Here's what we did:
3.0 was in e:\dlc\vantage and e:\dlcsrv\progress (LIVE DATABASE)
4.0 was in f:\epic40\vantage and f:\epic40\progress (TEST)
5.0 was in f:\epic50\vantage and f:\epic50\progress (TEST)

When we went live, we copied the 3.0 database to the 4.0 database location and started the conversion. Then (since we didn't need to save the converted 4.0 database) we ran the 5.0 conversion on the 4.0 database in place, while pointing the new database to the epic50 folder.

We did this at least three times before going live, which was good because I forgot a step (the last data conversion step in the instructions) when testing and it messed up the database. Be a bummer to take a whole weekend to convert and then have to restart from a day before.

With this method, you can run 5.0 as a test database, even though it is ready to be live. Get your reports and clients set up on the test database. Then when you go LIVE, you're mostly good to go.

reports using the test environment so it is done before going live. Correct
me if I'm wrong, but your test environment would either have to be on the
same server as you are planning to run 5 live. Ours is not, so I don't
think I can do that, however I'm planning a "pre-live" conversion on our
production server just to test out conversion times and find problems.

You would still have a lot of work to do in converting reports. Although maybe they would do that part too.

has anyone just called vantage and had them come to their facility to do the
upgrades. I am considering this as the best option. If it is so difficult and
has so many pitfalls, why take a chance with your companies life blood?

PLease let me know your experiences if you have approached it this way.
