I agree, as we did the 3.0 to 5.0 trip, we did a separate server. I
reinstalled the OS on the old server and installed 5.0 while I was doing the
conversions on the test server. When I finished I had a clean 5.0 install.
I would recommend this method for several reasons.
First, no progress conflicts on the live server.
Second, all conversions are automatically done in single users (faster)
mode.
Third, you can run the upgrade several times before touching the live server
to be sure there will be no unexpected issues (well, as few as possible).
Fourth, time...you can upgrade while you are installing the latest version
on the live server and be efficient about it.
Fifth, time again...you can run the upgrade and several times in advance and
have a real estimate on the amount of time this is going to take you
(allowing you to go home with the knowledge you can finish tomorrow if it
takes that long). After doing the 3.0 to 4.0 to 5.0 on a test server, I
have set it up for our next month plunge 5.0 to 5.1 to 5.2 to 6.0.
Just my thoughts,

We did our upgrade from 5.0 to 5.2 on a test server. We kept the same
mapped drive when we did the cut over on our main server. This kept report
builder changes to a minimum. This procedure allowed us to make a test run
and get our times down then the weekend when we upgraded we processed it on
the test server, but had restored a converted database to our main server.
We installed all the clients on the main server while doing schema changes
and database conversions on the test server. When it was complete we just
backed up the database and restored it on the main server.

We are planning to upgrade in the near future and I have a few questions
for the group. Epicor suggests that we do all the upgrades on a seperate
test server.
We think it would be easier to do it on our live server to seperate
folders and mapped drives. What is the good bad and ugly of either
procedure? Should the new versions be done on a test server? I have seen
replies from this group in the past on this. I would like to
upgrade/redirect all my report builder reports while in the test mode and
before we bring in the live database. Can I wait and do this after we have
gone through all the upgrades and before we bring in the live data? Will
older versions of progress and vantage cause problems on the same server? Do
all reference to previous versions have be deleted in the registry? I am
basically a report writer and have followed and archieved previous messages
from this group which have helped some. the upgrades will be done by an
outside tech who has no previous experience with vantage/progress, but knows
computer and network systems well.
All replies are appreciated.
Thanks
