3.0 to 5.0

Rick,
We made the leap from 3.0 to 5.0 in July. I would recommend the Dump & Load as well.
We started Friday evening around 8 p.m. At 10 A.M. the next morning we had finished going to 4.0. By Sat. evening we were on 5.0. A few hours Sunday was spent debugging some things (like Custom Report Links), ODBC, etc.

We had done the client installs weeks before -- we did them as we could get to various machines. This saved time on the conversion weekend, although we did have to reinstall Progress on a few machines (this was what was causing some problems in Custom Report Links).

If you have specific questions, just ask.

Troy

Has anybody out there done a 3.0 to 5.0 skip yet? We are planning to do
this before the end of the year, then go to 5.1 in the spring when we can
get a new server.

Our database is large, on the order of 1.2 gb, and was created in September
of 96. Should we maybe consider a dump and load to clean up some holes and
spead up the schema changes? I've done the 3 to 4 to 5 upgrade on a test
server a few times. The 3 to 4 has always gone just fine, but the 4 to 5
has not. One time it stalled for days on the schema changes and the next
time it went through without a hitch.

I will probably only have a Friday at noon to Sunday evening to pull this
off (including installation of 75 clients), so any problems or advice would
be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Rick

Rick,
I've done the 3 to 5 skip, to a new server, and had little trouble, but our
data base is smaller than yours. The consensus seems to be that for a DB
that size a dump and load is recommended. I'd have support help with that
process. I did our upgrade in about 11 hours. There have been several
others that have encountered long schema changes in our group, mine never
took that long. I'll be glad to give any help I can as I'm sure the rest of
the group will too.
