5.0 to 6.0 Test Install

I did an upgrade from 3.0 to 5.2 not to long ago. My only concern was that the last version should work properly. I did the whole upgrade on one partition and followed the procedures. I had some issues when I tried to run 5.2 after the upgrade. The problem was that the upgrade does not remove files left from the other versions. What I did is get my database up to the current level, ran a backup and wiped the OS. I reinstalled the OS and installed the latest version of Vantage. Worked like a charm.

I have just received our new test server to begin the upgrade testing
process. I have the system configured with only 1 logical drive for the
Vantage software. Does anyone know if it is better to create a drive for
each version or is it safe to load all the versions on the same drive?

Ok, due to popular demand here are the gory details.

I purchased a custom prog from Epicor that adds a check box to the printer
screen right next to the print preview button. This was two years ago so I
don't have a good feel for the price but I think it was around $1,000. This
prints all associated documents in the order they are listed in the document
window. It "works as programmed" but it is useless for Word or Excel.

I converted all of our test documents to PDF. Right now I use Adobe to do
this or I scan them on our Konica copier which will also scan, convert to
PDF and email the doc to me. I could use a recommendation for a cheap
AutoCAD to PDF converter. Word and Excel documents work fine with Adobe.

The PDF Printer Shell comes from www.pdf-tools.com. I'm using a demo copy
now. Single user is $190, multi-user license is $950. It requires Win2000
or higher on the client, which is a pain since most of us are on Win98SE. I
use Adobe to view the doc and the PDF tool to print. An example follows:

View command: acrord32.exe "&1"

Print command: W:\Vantage\dm\bin\pdprint -p "\\ServerName\PrinterName" "&1"

I got close to making it work myself using Adobe but it was an unsupported
feature that was not reliable. Ted at Misha1 found the pdf tool and made
all of the pieces fit. Any more technical than this and you need to talk to
Misha1. They also have a JPEG tool and their own interface with Vantage.
We didn't take this route since our drawings are small and we were loosing
too much detail with the JPEG conversion. I already had the interface we
purchased from Epicor that works with associated documents so I don't know
much about what Misha1 has.

Misha1 gets my "two thumbs up" review.

We just got this up and running on Friday and I'm still testing this so your
mileage may vary. I will keep plugging and let you know if it breaks.

Hey, when users make "features" work in Vantage do you get a rebate? That
would look nice when my maint comes due. :-)

converts files to a pdf file. When you install it, it sets itself up as a
printer, so when you select a printer, you select this option, it previews
the pdf document, gives options to save, send or print. For $60 a seat, it
is a great bargain. You can download a free trial version. It will even do
the screen captures of Vantage (F6) into a pdf. We've tried it with Pro-E,
Ashlar Vellum, Word, Excel, Report Builder reports -- it is pretty slick.
When I first tried it, I thought that it was too easy, and there must be

Thanks for your suggestion. Mitch has software that allows him to print
documents to a PDF file. The issue that was faced was coming up with a
process/program that would print the PDF files from a command-line that
would allow Riten to insert a printing sequence into document management and
work consistently.

On another note, I've since researched why the software only supports
printing on Windows NT/2000/XP and it was explained to me that Windows
95/98/Me still have some 16-bit printing interfaces and none of the
companies want to spend time programming any 16-bit programs that would work
with Windows 95/98/Me. Due to the fact that Windows 95/98/Me are getting
close to thier end-of-life dates, it will become more and more difficult to
find these cool little programs that work on them.

As far as the Misha1 product that was being worked on for Riten, we were
converting PDF documents to JPG images and printing them directly with the
traveler as sub-reports. The issue that arose was due to the type of
compression that JPG images use. This doesn't bode well with lines that are
only so many thousandths of an inch apart. The compression algorithms make
these into one line. GIF images also have some issues with tight line
tolerances due to the compression used.

I've attached a program I found a long time ago that we use to print PDF
files and it works with win95 or greater. Print command line = printpdf.exe
"&1"
