[5.2] Crystal Reports long run time

Charles,

DB is about 800 Mb, Server is Raid 1, 10/100 network/switch/workstations, no
screen savers.

Todd,

I was wrong about "sqlsrv2" staying in memory. This morning I closed Crystal
Reports, and the server task manager showed that the memory usage for
"sqlsrv2" was about 500 Kb. When I ran the report, the memory usage started
increasing at about 700 Kb/second until it got to about 250,000 Kb, (~5
minutes) and the report finally completed, and displayed the data. At the
time there was no other process using much CPU time (less than 3% total).

I'm monitoring the memory usage, and hope to find when/where and by what
replaces it.

Norm -

How large is the database ?
What type of Raid configuration on the server?
Network Speed ?
Workstation hardware configuration ?
Screen saver running on server ?

Thanks,

Charles

Todd,
RAM on the server is 1Gb, swapfile is 2 Gb. Free disk space on the Vantage
drive is 2.5 Gb, (about 25%). If you can believe Task Mgr on the server,
the "sqlsrv2" process is in memory (twice): 1 process uses about 312 Mb, and
the other 31 Mb. There is no page file swapping going on that I can see -
all time used is CPU time.

Norm,
I have another idea - since I am hip deep in the subject at the moment -
what is your memory and swapfile (virtual memory) setup like on the server?
Are you disk space and memory contstrained so that sqlsrv2 is getting
swapped out to disk? If, in the process of getting it swapped back into
memory the files being swapped out to make room have trouble finding space
it could cause the CPU to thrash. Then, with sqlsrv2 solidly in memory it
would run faster for awhile, until swapped out due to idleness in factor of
some more urgent process.

Setting the initial virtual memory size higher might help as would maybe
more RAM (and then too some more swapfile space on the disk to cover the new
RAM).

I posted this request for help the first time on 7/21/05, and Todd offered
some potential solutions, but nothing so far has solved my problem.

I'm on Vantage 5.2, Progress 9.1D08, CR 8.5 (with patches installed).

Can somebody explain why the run time for the same report (with similar
amounts of data) varies in run time on the same workstation. I usually
leave
my workstation (W2000Pro) running and connected to the server (W2000Server)
overnight, and run the report every morning. Some mornings it runs in a few
seconds, and other times it takes more than 3 minutes. At the time I run
the report, I check the server for running processes, and CPU time is
usually 1-4%. The process that consumes CPU time when I run the report is
"_sqlsrv2.exe". When the report runs in a few seconds, this process uses
all available CPU time; when it runs slow, it is only using about 3-4% CPU
time, and the remainder CPU time is "System Idle Process". Once I run the
report, I can run it again immediately, and the run time is again just a few
seconds.

Checking the ODBC configuration and when running a "test connect",
connection is established almost immediately.

One of Todd's suggestions was to run a simple report, and I've done that,
pulling data from one table. Run time the first time will be about 3
minutes. If I run it again immediately, it takes about 2 seconds. Running
the report again in about an hour or more, it takes 3 minutes again.
Running a new report after getting the run time for the first report down to
2 seconds, the new report (more complicated) takes about 5 minutes, but
running it again immediately, it takes about 10 seconds.

Thanks again for any help.
