Anyone having problems installing the Smart Client?

We’re still in implementation phase but moving from 3rd party hosted to Commercial Cloud. I’m trying to get the Smart Client installed but only 1 out of 5 computers has worked.

We have a custom install path “C:\Program Files (x86)\Kinetic” and the executable has to be copied to C:\Program Files and run from there with admin rights. The install appears to complete succesfully, except there’s an error when it goes to open File Explorer and show you the shortcuts, which is expected since it created them at C:\Users<admin logon>\Desktop and the logged-in user can’t access that folder. We copy the shortcut folder to ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu so that all users can now see them. So far, so good.
When we try and run the shortcuts we get the login window appear but it closes after 2 seconds, you’re unable to type anything in it. There are two entries in the Application log an Event ID 1026 and a 1000.

On the one computer that it actually works, we just downloaded a couple of different times and ran the install a couple of times. No idea why this worked but no others have. Have tried different computers and also one that isn’t on the domain, same results as above.

Have had a support case open for 19 days, no closer to a resolution hence me asking here.

How important is it to you to have the install location c:\Program Files (x86)? This is a protected folder and brings a lot of baggage with it - as you know.

Using the default c:\Epicor will bring you less grief. In the long run, 2+ years or so, you’ll be using the browser so this is a short term fix.

Using C:\Epicor has it’s own baggage, too! We run Software Restriction Policy so no executables can run unless they’re in Program Files or explicitly allowed.

Also, what’s with the install putting the shortcuts in the users account, instead of where everyone that can use the computer has access to?

You may want to consider, like other Epicor users, not to use the installation program and take control of your own deployments.

Mark, thank you for the help.

Once we figure out how to get it to install then I think we’ll have to pursue deploying it with PDQ Deploy. Our users have no admin rights so we need to be able to push from the back end or touch each computer.

The good news is the install is very non-intrusive. There are no registry entries to worry about, just a straight folder copy. That’s why people were able to use PowerShell and RoboCopy to do the installs above.
