AutoCAD

We have made an integration with a PDM package called Pro*File from Procad.
Pro*file integrates with autocad, Pro-engineer and several other cad
applications. Although we are not completely finished with the integration
we will be able to import/export to Pro*file BOM's and we are able to view
the BOM in Profile from Vantage and in Pro*file you will be able to open the
vantage part advisor.

Hello All,

I am being asked by our design team if anyone has done any integration with
AutoCAD from a point of BOM out and Vantage import.

Any help would be appreciated.

We use it by converting the AutoCAD image to a .PDF file and use Adobe
Reader (free) to view documents via document mgmt.
Works very well & minimizes the number of AutoCAD licenses needed ($avings).

Autocad also has a free viewer called VoloView. It will read and print any
dwg format drawing. That would cut out the interim step of creating a pdf
file and not require a license of Acrobat.

I thought the question was: How can the Bill of Materials generated by
AutoCad be IMPORTED into Vantage BOM. The key word is imported. I know there
is an export utility. Is there an Import utility or an alternative to feed
information to Vantage?

With the ABOM module you can import BOM data into vantage. HOWEVER, the
imported data is very limited, and it can only import single-level BOM's.
We have the module, but do not use the feature.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
I would add to what Sarah has said regarding importing BOM's into Vantage.
It can work for some companies if you have a very controlled process for
doing it. You need to know for sure how it works and how it might affect
your accounting and inventory people before you turn it loose.

- Every part on the BOM to be imported becomes a master part (if it doesn't
already exist as a master part) with only the following pieces of
information being imported (this is true for version 3.0 at least): Part
Num, Description, Type (M for manufactured, P for purchased), and Quantity
(meaning quantity required per parent into which the individual part is
being imported). I have talked to companies who have found that they end up
with multiple versions of the same part simply because an engineer did a
typo in his CAD program, or one types with spaces and one doesn't, or one
uses dashes instead of spaces, or one puts in the vendor's part number
instead of his company's part number, etc, etc, etc. If a thorough review
of the BOM about to be imported takes place, this phase can work.

- Then there is the issue of knowing what parts just got created, so that
someone can go in and add all the required master part information, such as
class, or group (which might be used to drive G/L #s), warehouse info,
vendor information and price breaks, selling price., costing method, max/min
information, etc.,etc., etc. Again, this can work if the proper procedures
are in place.

There might be more issues, like does the engineer have the latest rev in
his BOM.

Just thought you might need to address some of these issues before you
consider letting this cat out of the bag.

Rick,
We use AutoCAD and save all drawings to a DWG files. We then use AutoVue to
View & Print. We have found from time to time that AutoVue does not
print/view drawing symbols and other data properly. When AutoCAD went from
release 14 c2, c3 etc... AutoVue had a cow. Cimmetry Systems has fixed
several thing for us but we were so concerned we purchase AutoCAD for our
Production Department to print drawings for the shop floor. My question for
you is, Have you ever had any issues with AutoCAD not saving/printing to a
PDF file properly? We are giving this route serious consideration.

Check AutoDesks web site because I believe version 1 of VoloView was free,
now version 2 is out and they are charging for it. Don't drug dealers
operate this way also!

There are two versions of VoloView. One is a free version called Express
that only allows you to view and print. The other, which costs money,
allows you to "mark up" a drawing as well, some kind of a collaboration
thing so all users don't need Autocad installed. I think cost for VoloView
is $199.

Rick
I have the free version if anyone would like it.

Hello Mark, I sure could use it. I spend too much time between Mastercam,
Cadkey and Autoview trying to get a decent printout of a dwg file. If you
could send it offline here is my email, [dupuism@...]

Thanks in advance.
