Backups (revisited)

Back up is a very subjective subject since everyone has their own ideas
and every network configuration seems to have differences.

We run a Progress database that is now approximately 4.5 GB. Our
procedure for Vantage backups is similar to yours:

Differential backups during the week.

Full Backup on Sunday Morning.

All backup tapes are kept offsite.

A copy of the database backup is kept on the network.

I also perform an online backup of the vantage database at 7:45 AM and
then every 2 hours starting at 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM. This backup is
also copied to another location on the network at that time. I stop the
appservers and database, truncate the BI and perform an offline backup
every night at approximately 10:00 PM (we only run one shift). Both the
online and offline backups reside on the Vantage server, another network
location and on the backup tape. The tape backup is taken offsite the
next day.

I have actually considered performing an online backup every hour versus
every 2 hours but just have not decided yet. I have not had any users
notice a slow down during the online backup process or at least they
have not said anything.

I am sure there would be other considerations if I were using a SQL
database. I know it would be possible to perform an online backup of
the SQL database with certain backup software, e.g. Backup Exec. I do
that now with my Exchange server store; it is backed up to a folder
versus tape during the day. I have not really thought about using the
Volume Shadow Copy or whether it would slow down the system too much to
even consider. Performance is always an issue and I do not want to
affect it too much unless absolutely necessary.

Subject: [Vantage] Backups (revisited)

I've been doing some research on here regarding backups. I couldn't
find any recent threads so I figured that I'd breath some life back
into this subject.

A couple of months ago I restructured our backups which included
dumping our tape backups and going with swappable TB drives. We
currently use NT backup for system and files and SQL Studio for
individual database backups. A full is run every Sunday and diffs
are scheduled each night. Databases are backed up fully each night.
A copy of backups stay on the network and a 2nd copy is brought
offsite each night.

One area of improvement for us is to use something like Volume Shadow
Copy or DPS for our file servers, SQL, and Sharepoint.

Is anyone out there using a similar setup and are there other
recommendations for software/hardware? How many versions of backups
do you keep? What's the rotation schedule? How do you validate?
How often do you validate? Has anyone out there installed Virtual
Server for validation purposes? Anyone want to buy a Dell Tape
backup system complete with lot's of unused tapes?
