Bar-coding Travelers

I am using a Value Team 3080 LED scanner.
It allows embedding "$I" = "Ctrl-I" = {TAB} in the barcodes and it acts
on it. As a result <Job Number>$I<Assmbly Number>$I<Operation Number>$M
can be scanned at a data collection workstation and it fills in all the
info listed above. The one issue is how wide a barcode can be and still
be easily read.

My intent? Put barcodes on reports (such as jobs requiring planning) so
the planner can scan them off as he completes each job's planning. They
can also be used to quickly add jobs to a project or select them for
printing. Report builder can be used with the built-in barcode font to
do this fairly easily.

Where did I get it and how much did it cost? From Ryzex, a reseller of
barcoding stuff. It was about $160. Contact: Mikea@....

BTW: Your existing scanner may work. $K = VT (Vertical Tab), and I think
you may need Horizontal Tab (HT or $I). I used to use a lot of ASCII
characters to drive an old plotter, so I remember most of ACSII (0-31).

Maybe it is just my scanner but embedding $K is supposed to be
interpreted
as a single VT or Tab (ascii 11) without causing the printer to skip to
a
tab position. When scanned it is converted to a single tab character.
I am
not sure if this is a standard feature of the symbology or built in to
the
WelchAllyn scanner. If this is standard and you have already tried it
without success I'll be really bummed.

Hi everyone,

I know this was talked about before, but haven't been able to find the
mails, so...

We are looking into having our guys scan a barcode on the job traveler that
would be read into Vantage Data Collection to eliminate clocking into the
wrong jobs and assembly levels. Our data collection terminals (WYSE) run
off of a Citrix server.

Has anyone done this? I know how to turn on the bar-coding on the traveler,
but what units are you using to read the barcode and interface with Vantage
Data Collection? How much does it cost, is it easy to set up, and can we
get a loaner to play with?

Thanks in advance,

Manasa Reddy
We've been interested in this. We want it so it fills out with job and op
numbers. We don't have the scanner with that capability. Is anybody using
a handheld scanner with that capability?

We have been using the WelchAllyn Imageteam 3800 limear image scanner (gun
type) and they have worked very well. They are keyboard wedge type where
they scan the barcodes and translate to keyboard strokes so no other
software was required. They are on PC but I suspect they will work with any
terminal using PC keyboard signals. They have different Y-cables for
various terminal models. They are not cheap (around $300 each if I remember
correctly) and there are definitely less espensive alternatives. Check
SystemID Warehouse for examples. A local distributor for WelchAllyn loaned
us a scanner for over a month to try out. Basically he billed us and then
took it back at no restocking charge. Vendors of this type of equipment are
really "hungry" lately and should be very cooperative.

I would definitely shy away from lower cost wand type scanners that require
contact with paper. The lense gets dirty and requires constant cleaning.

As for Stephen's question about filling out job and op numbers. The
barcodes on the process sheet include job, assembly level and oper codes and
the scanner above fills them in on the data collection screen fine. I am
not sure what other capability you are looking for.

What one of our owners wanted to happen was to have one barcode where on the
start job screen this barcode contains Job# Assembly Seq and OP Seq. The
barcode would have the appropriate character to make it jump from one blank
to the other and fill all three in one scan.

From what I understood of the barcode that already exists on the traveler,
it should do that with one scan. But that is exactly what we want to

software was required.

Hi everyone,

get a loaner to play with?

Thanks in advance,

This is one of the reasons we chose to purchase the Caesar Dev data
collection module. Hardware alone will not do this. I think if you wait
until Vantage 5.1 is released it will have this ability, otherwise Caesar is
a solid solution that works now. We currently use an intermec CCD scanner
and our employees clock in by simply scanning their badge. They start labor
by scanning one bar code from the traveler that contains the Job#, Asm#, and
Opr#. They scan that barcode again to end labor. Nice and Simple. Caesars
program doesn't require a Vantage license and Vantage is raising the cost of
theirs significantly. Some things to think about. We tested both systems
and multiple hardware devices before making our final decision. We found
that the easier you make the labor entry on the shop floor the easier it is
to train people, even people that have never touched a computer have
excellent results. Keep it simple.

Good luck,

Darren Mann

That has been discussed here but I am not sure if it was ever resolved. I
have been tempted to try to do this but have never gotten arounf to it.
There is suppsoed to be a way to embed Tab characters on the end of
barcodes. If the keyboard wedge types are truly simulating keyboard strokes
this ought to work. The downside is flashing past warnings (oper closed,
etc...) which dealing with each field one at a time forces the operator to
notice. In the end a great deal of this depends on the scanner and codes it
supports.

What one of our owners wanted to happen was to have one barcode where on the
start job screen this barcode contains Job# Assembly Seq and OP Seq. The
barcode would have the appropriate character to make it jump from one blank
to the other and fill all three in one scan.

I came up with a work around mainly due to the invalid shift warning we were
getting caused by our flex time. It's been a while but as I recall I
changed the employee badge report i.e to clock out
BarcodeC39('S'+{empbasic.EMPID}) & BarcodeC39('ooo'), I programmed the
handheld scanner ???, and I used a Macro utility (Macro Express) to provide
responses to the Vantage pop up messages. I have not explored taking this
beyond the basic attendance transactions.

A standard 3 of 9 bar code will not allow you to embed a tab into it. It
interprets it as just that a tab in the bar code, creating gaps where they
occur. Tried it in numerous combinations, it just would not work. Called
tech for the scanner, vantage, label software, etc., no one had a solution.
It has to be done by the software and vantage doesn't do it...

Maybe it is just my scanner but embedding $K is supposed to be interpreted
as a single VT or Tab (ascii 11) without causing the printer to skip to a
tab position. When scanned it is converted to a single tab character. I am
not sure if this is a standard feature of the symbology or built in to the
WelchAllyn scanner. If this is standard and you have already tried it
without success I'll be really bummed.

We've been interested in this. We want it so it fills out with job and op
numbers. We don't have the scanner with that capability. Is anybody using
a handheld scanner with that capability?
