Bar code scanner info

A little practice in barcode etiquette and a bunch of playing and you
are there...
Seriously, with a little boost from this group and a helpful CAM (thanks
Jeff if you are listening) I did it.
For what you are thinking, I would expect you will learn how to generate
your own barcodes, you may learn a little Progress Procedure writing,
and you may learn to love the BAM. The real trick is to plan out what
you want the system to do, and then to figure where you can use a
barcode and scanner to make the process quick and accurate.
I will be happy to give pointers as I am able.
Aaron

Aaron,

How difficult would it be to setup a system? Say for inventory
movement and data collection? This is for your Vantage "Expert" with no
bar coding experience.

Hey all. We are looking into a bar code scanner for our system. Probably for inventory transactions and maybe labor transactions. I'm gussing the ImageTeam 3800 (hand held) and 3900 (fixed mount) from HHP (Hand Held Products).

Can anyone who has a bar code scanning system please comment on how well they work? Are they worth it? Any problems/solutions implementing? Anything?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I love our ImageTeam 3800 scanners. Very durable, plug-n-play easy. Just plug into PC keyboard line and start scanning. In four years never had a problem with one. Mostly used to let data collection users avoid typing job traveler info but we've never made it mandatory other than posting employee clock number bar code sheets at specific PCs to encourage people to use the one closest to where they work (rather than closest to the exit). One additional use....scanning the UPS bar code (regular not 2-D) for the tracking number dirctly into the field in customer shipment screen. No typos and it is available for customer service to use to call up UPS site. Scans FedEx bar code too so would work for them as well.

Thanks for the info.

When you scan the barcode, does it propagate only one field, or are they programmed to fill in multiple fields? And who does the programming?

I've never seen any barcode system up close, so please forgive my ignorance.

I have experimented with muli-field combos but for philisophical reasons have resisted implmenting. I WANT the users to scan slowly, carefully and visually verify what has been entered (just as when typing) while also taking note of any warnings or error messages. The slight loss of efficiency is more than made up for by fewer data errors.

The programming for mutl-field entry that I have done has been in the barcodes themselves with appropriate special characters embedded so that several fields are in one long bar - which brings the recollection that the scanner has to be "programmed" for extended-ASCII by scanning a special barcode in the user manual, if it was not already set by default. All the actual barcodes themselves I have created in Crystal (modified Job Traveler) or Report Builder (soon to be Crystal too :( ). They are printed mostly on laser printers and use the Dataworks-39 (code 39 bar code format) font. So in large part what you do with bar coding depends a lot more on the printing side than the scanner side. Using the "out of the box" bar codes in Vantage would be almost zero work (just print, plug the scanner into the keyboard line and scan away).

If you are going to get into printing labels for inventory then things get a little more complicated and you would probably need a label printer. We've been very happy with our Zebra Z4M printer printing to 4" X 6" direct thermal labels. No special programming on the printer required - just treat it like any laser printer. All our shipping labels are done with RB (for now). Very simple.

Todd,
I would have to disagree with you on one point.
I have found that if I force employees to scan "slowly" they type
instead. This brings in error after error.
Having all the information in one barcode makes it easier for the
employee to do it right then wrong, and I have seen greatly reduced
errors using that technique. I find the number of errors due to warning
messages are next to none, and here are limited to the job being closed
and they are still trying to work on it. They call me and say...I was
scanning the barcode for job XXXX and it keeps leaving me with numbers
where I they don't belong. I go in and reopen the job and they try
again, and all is well.
It comes down to a philosophy...If I make it easier to do right than
wrong, they will. Each time I come across data being entered wrong, I
find a way to make it easier to do it right. Also, the average person
on the floor here tends to "just want to do their job" and does not want
to "waste time" in front of the computer. I give a solution that has
keeps their computer transaction time to under 10 seconds and everyone
is happy.
Again, these are just my thoughts, and everyone is welcome to their
opinion.

PS, I love the Metrologic MS5900 Voyager series scanners. They can be
used with a trigger (code gate) or put in their stand and used as
proximity scanners. And they are relatively cheap, but reliable. I am
using several USB "plug and play" units right now, and a "keyboard
pass-through" as well. They work great.
Just another thought.

I have experimented with muli-field combos but for philisophical
reasons have resisted implmenting. I WANT the users to scan slowly,
carefully and visually verify what has been entered (just as when
typing) while also taking note of any warnings or error messages. The
slight loss of efficiency is more than made up for by fewer data errors.

The programming for mutl-field entry that I have done has been
in the barcodes themselves with appropriate special characters embedded
so that several fields are in one long bar - which brings the
recollection that the scanner has to be "programmed" for extended-ASCII
by scanning a special barcode in the user manual, if it was not already
set by default. All the actual barcodes themselves I have created in
Crystal (modified Job Traveler) or Report Builder (soon to be Crystal
too :( ). They are printed mostly on laser printers and use the
Dataworks-39 (code 39 bar code format) font. So in large part what you
do with bar coding depends a lot more on the printing side than the
scanner side. Using the "out of the box" bar codes in Vantage would be
almost zero work (just print, plug the scanner into the keyboard line
and scan away).

If you are going to get into printing labels for inventory then
things get a little more complicated and you would probably need a label
printer. We've been very happy with our Zebra Z4M printer printing to
4" X 6" direct thermal labels. No special programming on the printer
required - just treat it like any laser printer. All our shipping
labels are done with RB (for now). Very simple.

Thanks for the info.

When you scan the barcode, does it propagate only one field, or
are they programmed to fill in multiple fields? And who does the
programming?

I've never seen any barcode system up close, so please forgive

I love our ImageTeam 3800 scanners. Very durable, plug-n-play
easy. Just plug into PC keyboard line and start scanning. In four years
never had a problem with one. Mostly used to let data collection users
avoid typing job traveler info but we've never made it mandatory other
than posting employee clock number bar code sheets at specific PCs to
encourage people to use the one closest to where they work (rather than
closest to the exit). One additional use....scanning the UPS bar code
(regular not 2-D) for the tracking number dirctly into the field in
customer shipment screen. No typos and it is available for customer
service to use to call up UPS site. Scans FedEx bar code too so would
work for them as well.

Hey all. We are looking into a bar code scanner for our system.
Probably for inventory transactions and maybe labor transactions. I'm
gussing the ImageTeam 3800 (hand held) and 3900 (fixed mount) from HHP
(Hand Held Products).

Can anyone who has a bar code scanning system please comment on
how well they work? Are they worth it? Any problems/solutions
implementing? Anything?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Aaron,

How difficult would it be to setup a system? Say for inventory movement and data collection? This is for your Vantage "Expert" with no bar coding experience.
