Bar Codes, scanners and Vantage

Exactly the same process as keyboard/mouse. The primary advantage to the scanner is avoiding keyboard typos - such as clocking into the wrong job or operation. Also some of the shop people are niether keybord not mouse "comfortable" and scanning is much faster for them. They still must tab between fields and press "enter" or click OK . There are ways to structure the barcode fields to include tabs and "enter" and such but I tend to resist this in favor of making them look at the entry and/or read error messages - so I have never implemented that.

I'll send our shop floor data collection procedure off line....but one warning; I just noticed the screen shots are from Vantage 5.2 and look like Office Data collection more than the 6.10 version for the shop. So it is a bit obsolete. Good thing the ISO auditor did not catch it last time.

Todd,

I'm also trying to get a feel for the sequence that a shop employee
would go through. The Vantage Tutorial assumes that were using a
keyboard/mouse and the Plant Floor module. I'm finding some bar code
info in the help but it feels a little disjointed so far.

Do you happen to have anything in the way of a process flow that you
could share?

Thanks,

Bruce

We bar code the travelers and people may optionally scan from them into data collection - someday this will be mandatory. We have sheets with employee numbers at the DC PCs and scanning those is mandatory (so that they use specific locations). We also scan UPS tracking numbers from the UPS labels into the packing slip so that Customer Service can "one button" track shipments. Finally we print bar coded shipping labels for custom requirements by some customers. We've been useing Welch-Allyn ImageTeam scanners for 5 years without ever having a failure and a Zebra Z4M label printer with only one head change.

Hi,

We would like to use Bar Codes and Scanners when we go live with
Vantage 6.1. We have never used Bar Codes before. Anybody care to
share their experiences?

Thanks,

Actually using the Dataworks Code 39 font (or whatever they call it now, the "out of the box" Vantage Code 3 of 9 font) I have not had to do much of anything. All the bar code fields have to have a "*" character and the start and end in Code 39. In the stock forms (in Crystal) all the bar code fields that are put in the DBF files are prefixed with "BC" because they have the asteriks appended already. For other fields you would have to create a new field in Crystal and append them yourself. We print all of the stock "forms" (even if modified) on laser printers. The bar codes on one line ought to have a sufficient "quiet" space between them. The start/stop * characters ought to be enough to be recognized by the scanner to let it ignore bars to the sides. The gun type scanners we use have never had a problem with selecting a particular item. The scanner guns were plu & play (no setup). The just pluged in-line on the keyboard line and feed character strokes to the PC as if they had been typed.

The bar coded labels were all done with RB. I treat the Zebra printer just like a laser - no special printer coding required.

Todd,

What kind of setup (if any) did you have to do?
Did you customize any of the bar codes?
I'm experimenting with printing out bar codes and scanning today.
Just using a laserjet printer for now.
Some of the stock printouts have several bar codes on the same line.
I'm finding it tricky to pick the bar code I want on these.

Thanks,

Bruce
