Barcode scanning and MES

We had an identical experience with MES and I reported it to Tech
Support here in the UK as I could find nothing wrong in our setup,
traveler barcodes, etc. I managed to convince then that something wasn't
right, they then did some testing of their own and confirmed that we
weren't imagining things. MES was trying to 'help' but in fact getting
in the way of the barcode data being entered by the scanner. When
entering data using a keyboard and mouse this behaviour is a good thing
but in my view they've not taken proper account of scanners in whatever
'improvement' they have made.

I reported this in February 2008 when we noticed it first in Vantage
v4.04. UK Tech Support escalated this internally as programming change
request SCR 48783 and I was told to expect a fix in release v8.03.405 so
I guess we're all still waiting until then.

In the meantime we use a mixture of barcode scanning and keyboard
navigation, not ideal but it works for now until this bug is fixed.

When using barcode scanning off a job traveler, I set up the operation barcode to do single scan for JOB + ASM + OPR (basically, job number, tab, assembly, tab, operation seq)
the "helpful" "functionality" of the combo boxes that hold the operations and assemblies are messing it up.

example,
job num = LOG123456
assembly = 0
operation seq = 20

barcode is *LOG123456$I0$I20*
the $I code is the TAB

what happens when it moves to operation seq, the "2" key goes in, and the second it does, the list "suggests" opr seq 20, so that when the barcode of the "0" goes it now ends up at "200"

If you've worked with this and have experience, please let me know how you solved it.

Thank you

We do this same thing but our barcode actually does a little more.

What version are you on? I'm on 8.03.305K and it works great.

Please do not respond to this email offline as I am also interested to see
how the sequence is put together. I have been struggling for a week trying
to get it to work properly as we are fully implementing MES within the next
couple of weeks.

We're at 404a

The barcode is this:

*LOG100153$I0$I20$I* (type out: "LOG100153", tab, type out "0", tab, type "20", tab again)

it's a good barcode, I know it works as intended.
It's meant to be used for "Start Production Activity"

Even if I stand there with a keyboard, and type each of the characters in the barcode (that's really all a scanner is doing) it does same to me standing there.

as soon as I type the 2 in the Operation Seq., it will "suggest" the 0, and so next 0 I type actually enters 200.

Is sounds like they must have "enhanced" this drop down box.

I haven't tried 404 yet but try going into customization for this screen
and see if there is a property on this drop down box called
auto-complete of auto-fill or something to that extent that maybe you
can set to FALSE.
