Changing Vantage Server IP Address

The way I keep people from accessing the internet is to not pass DNS numbers
through the DHCP scope. For those who are allowed internet access I just
add the DNS numbers manually. It works very well here because people
generally don't know about those things or stay out of their configurations
(fearing the wrath of Rick of course!). If you have a bunch of computer
savvy users though, this won't work at all like the software solutions Dave
was suggesting.

Rick
Looking for a shortcut....

I need to change all IP address on my servers, Vantage
included, to accommodate a new T1 internet connection.
Something to do with Class of service from our ISP.

I know when installing Vantage Client on a workstation
I define the IP address of the Vantage server during
each install. Short of re-installing on all
workstations, does anyone know of a shortcut to this
problem. Seems that there should be a file on the
client or server somewhere the contains the server IP
address. Thought of the SERVICES file under WINDOWS
but that defines the port not the address.

I've got 184 workstation with Vantage loaded and I'd
really like to avoid having to re-install. HELP??!?!

IP addresses are defined in the HOSTS file under Windows. You should just
be able to change it there.

Jim,

I don't know of a short cut from here, but you should be using Names instead
of IP addresses. You need to have DNS or WINS running and put static IP
addresses on your servers and use DHCP to assign IPs for you workstations.
This way, there would not have been anything to do except change the server
IPs and change the DHCP scope, release and renew the leases, and you would
have been done.

The only other thing I can think of at this time would be to dual NIC your
Vantage server. That might work.

Or similar to what Dave said with the dual NICs in the server, if you have a
firewall or proxy you could set up a NAT and keep your IP addressing scheme
the same internally and use the new IP addressing for the T1 externally.
That would require no changes at all except to configure the NAT. Anymore
this is the preferred way to do a connection anyway because it doesn't show
your internal IP addresses to the rest of the world and minimizes the ever
dwindling number of "real" IP addresses your ISP has to assign to you.

Rick
We did this exact thing. ISP assigned IP address to our firewall (as
opposed to dual NIC) and non-routable IP addresses everywhere internally.
Not using DHCP so when we IP'd each PC I popped in a diskette with a .BAT
routine to delete and copy in a new HOSTS file. Two of us going to each of
60 PCs took about 2hrs on a Sat. incl. boot-up/shutdown of each. Now we
will never run out of IP addresses and saved money with ISP bay having a
smaller range (4 numbers). And, as said, with NAT we are more secure. With
static IPs when someone calls and can't connect I can try to ping them and
have them check wires before leaving my desk.

If you are going to us static IP's and HOSTS files, you should set the HOSTS

Now that we have total control over our IP addresses this should never be an
issue again anyway. The hosts file only refers to servers and I don't plan
on adding any servers that would require an entry (like Vantage does). The
Vantage client setup creates (or modifies) the hosts file for the new client
PCs. But thanks for the suggestion.

and figures that there are going to be a whole lot of angry people.

Gary,

I can't recall off hand, but I am looking for it. As soon as I find it I
will post it.
It's been a long time since I have used the HOSTS file. DHCP and DNS or
WINS
is just so much easier.

Todd,

If you are going to us static IP's and HOSTS files, you should set the HOSTS
files to point to one MASTER host file. That way, when you add a new PC you
only have to change one file.

Network Address Translation - For us it means we have one IP address for the
"world" and the firewall translates internal IP addresses (in the
192.168.xxx.xxx range) to this external and vice-versa. The 192.168 range
is non-routable so invisible outside of our LAN. If you do not have NAT or
some other firewall your are badly exposing all the computer on your LAN to
the whole Internet. You can do NAT (via Proxy Server) on the server but is
slower and not as robust as having a firewall do it. This topic can get
very "deep" quickly.

Gary,

I talked to a network expert friend of mine (he teaches MCSE classes) and he
had the following to say:

Quote.

As far as your HOSTS file question, there's no way to point workstations to
a single HOSTS file, they each require their own. The only possible
solution I can think of is to make use of the administrative shares on the
workstations (assuming they're all NT based) and do the following:

Keep the "master" HOSTS file on a workstation or server. Write a .bat or
.cmd file that when run from the machine which contains a copy of the
"master" HOSTS file would 1.) go out and delete the HOSTS file from every
workstation on the network using the C$ share, and 2.) copy the "master"
hosts file out to all of the workstations to replace the deleted one.

In order for this to work all of the workstations must be on the network at
the time the batch file is run. I use a method similar to this one to batch
copy practice files for our end-user courses to the student machines so that
we don't have to copy files one machine at a time for every class we set up.

Unquote.

The preceding from Rob Jaramillo, ExecuTrain Indianapolis.

If you need it, Rob said he could send me a sample of this batch file.

I was mistaken, it is the LMHOSTS file that you can use an include file.

Todd,

If you are going to us static IP's and HOSTS files, you should set the HOSTS
files to point to one MASTER host file. That way, when you add a new PC you
only have to change one file.

Thanks Dave, and thank Rob for me. I do have DHCP and WINS. The reason I
wondered about this, is that I have quite a few static IP's assigned to W2K
workstations that are out where anyone could access them easily. To avoid
unauthorized internet use, I assigned a static IP to these W2K workstations
and gave them a bogus router IP address. Seemed like the simplest way out
at the time. Maybe there's a better way to handle that part.

Thanks for the legwork,
Gary

Gary,

Do you use MS Proxy Server or ISA (Internet Security & Acceleration Server)?
You can block it for those machines with those products.

Thanks for the legwork,
Gary

We're not using them. Are they stand-alone packages?

Gary,

Do you use MS Proxy Server or ISA (Internet Security & Acceleration Server)?
You can block it for those machines with those products.

Thanks for the legwork,
Gary
