Corrupted Progress database

Sorry to hear about loss of backups.

One part of our disaster recovery readiness is to take a copy of our
backup at least once a month and restore it to either our training db or
test db to make sure our backups are running correctly. More frequently
if any concerns. We also do a daily check of the backup logs from
scheduled tasks to make sure all looks good as well.

We also have a separate server that has the same version of software
that is loaded on live. We use this as a test server. This allows us to
test patches etc against a current copy of our database to see how it
performs without touching the live server since the same software runs
the training and test databases on the live server.

This helps avoid unpleasant surprises.

Hello!

What could cause a Progress database to become corrupted?

We are on Vantage 6.1, Progress 9.1D platform

I've gone to technical support and they can't prove why our dB became
corrupted.

So, I wanted to ask this group if they have any suggestions. My
hardware on the server is fine. Of course, I have the antivirus
excluding the epicor folder and my backup software is not touching
Epicor. So, what else could be the cause?

Thank you so much for your input on this crucial 'whodunit' scenario!

And what do they mean by corrupted? Does it not start? Do the Progress
tools tell you there's corruption or are they saying that the values
inside of your database won't work with Vantage? Do you update your
database via ODBC?

Without any warnings in our log file...our database stopped itself and
showed this in the mfgsys.lg file:

The last backup was not completed successfully. (1553)

Our database stopped running and wouldn't start back up.

The log file was saying corrupt file. Then, when Vantage tech support
tried to Restore from my backup. The restore process would only go so
far then stop. So, tech support told me that our backups were damaged
or corrupted as well. We lost a lot of data, because the last valid

The log file never said unsuccessful backup until the last 2 days before

Leading up to the complete shut down of dB, the database automatically

That sounds like bad data, not data corruption or a corrupted database.

Re-installing Epicor won't fix a corrupted database or bad data.

Hi Tamara/Mark,

What do you mean by corrupted? We also think our DB is corrupted because

Also, Live DB seems to create random errors in the credit card processing,

I am trying to determine if our DV (SQL) is corrupted so we can decide if we

My gut instinct is telling me that you had a something wrong with a hard
drive at some point, which caused a write error.

Your best bet to try to recover the most recent version of your data would
be to try to do a dump and load on the database where it sits now, although
the fact that you tried to restore multiple backups til you found one that
works makes me think you aren't able to do that since it probably over wrote
that copy that wasn't working in the first place.
