Cranky System Agent

Is your SQL on the same server as Vantage? if not, some people have had
problems with their NIC cards turning off due to inactivity causing a
disconnect.

What version and patch level for OpenEdge are you on? There were some
problems that have been fixed in the OpenEdge patches which were causing the
appservers to stop working.

Are you looking at the logs prior to restarting them? In most cases the logs
are reset and blanked out upon the restart of an appserver, so you need to
be sure to copy them out of the Logs folder prior to restart so you don't
lose them. Also, setting them up to have a threshold size of 50000000 with a
maximum number of logs as 10 in verbose mode with the append box NOT checked
is a good way to troubleshoot, this way you're not stuck with short logs,
nor with the logs sucking up your storage space either.

There should be something in the logs that tells you a problem at that
point, they don't stop for no reason...

Help? My System Agent has taken to acting erratically of late, and I
can't figure out how to make it stop. I'm on 405A, and have the agent
set to auto-start. Progress Explorer tells me all the app servers are
active, and things are hunky and dory all at once. BUT, System Agent
off the utilities menu shows the agent as stopped, and no hints of how
one might start it again without doing something really aggressive
like rebooting the server. It really seems to be stopped - my tasks
aren't running as they should, and have in the past. I'm not live
yet, but will be in a couple of weeks, and this just isn't going to fly.

Does anyone have similar experience, or ideas to share?

Lynn,

In the progress explorer stop the Agent and then restart it.

Steve,

I can certainly do that, and have en route to other things already, but it doesn't always work - sometimes the restart hangs, and the only reliable solution I've found for that is a server reboot. It shouldn't take such aggressive management on a routine basis... My server is oversized for the load we'll put on it, so it's not that.

Would that toddler parenting techniques worked on software that acts like a toddler! Oh, well.

Thank you!

Have you looked at the error log file for the app server to see if there are
any errors? You may have to change the logging level to catch the problem.

I can't remember exactly which release it was, but somewhere in the 405 or 406 release range we experienced random crashes of the App Services and even unexplained shutdowns of the Progress databases. Sometimes I would have to restart the entire server to get things working again. After we upgraded to the next patch, these went away. Sorry I can't be more specific on which release it was.

Steve,

I've had logging set at verbose for a while now, but the error logs didn't offer anything useful. Assorted stops and starts, but all seem to be associated with my copying my 'live' db to the test db, and sometime later rebooting the server after it misbehaved. Nothing meaningful about the misbehavior, unfortunately.

The next reply to my post, from Steve Gotschall, discusses random hiccups in Progress databases. Mine is SQL, but otherwise I'm seeing pretty much exactly what he describes.

When you copy your live data base to the training you have to start only
data base and the mfgsys app server. When you get into the data base under
utilities > system agent you need to change the port setting on the task
manager to the training 8303 > 8313 and 8301 > 8311. This may change if you
have setup different from the default. Then start the processes and task
agents.

I did that as part of the copy process; the disconnects happened after. I'm about ready to blame the problem on poltergeists in the server....
