Data Administratotion tool

How do they get around the Progress CRC error???? Any Progress code
that accesses the changed field should have to be recompiled. Unless
the conversion from Memo to Character doesn't change the CRC, due to
some strange relation with the two types.

Could you please post the instructions.

Thanks,
Lonnie

Does anybody know how to connect to the progress database for Vantage
using the Data Administration tool? I need to change a field type from
memo and I believe this is the correct tool to do it.

Thanks in advance...

I may be wrong but I think, if you change the field type it will create a new
identity for the database and you will not be able to connect with Vantage.
I think its called a "CR something number" and vantage uses it to make sure
the database is at the same level as when it was when vantage was compiled.

Then again, I may be wrong. I wouldn't do it on the live database.

Then let me ask this a different way...

Is there a way to change a VB form field (ie. Character01) from Memo to
String without seriously damaging anything??

Brandon,

Using Version 6.1 as an example.
You need the clients "service" file entry of:
mfgsys61 6100/tcp
(remember to have a carriage return at the end of the file or it won't
work.)

Then in "Data Administration" select "Database" drop down menu and "Connect
Database".
Physical Name: (Use the Browse to point to the database)
Network: TCP
Host Name: (your server name goes here)
Service Name: (Matches the service entry on client above) mfgsys61
Press OK.

Should be the same basic procedure in 80 but with new service and database
names.

Word of caution on making changes do the database, do in a test environment
first.

Do not change any field in any standard Vantage table! You will
probably get a CRC error, requiring a re-compile of source code, and
guess what, most of us don't have Vantage source code!

FYI, I have successfully added new tables to the Vantage DB in the
past, but would not recommend it.

Yep.. what he said...<g>

I've gotten Instructions from Epicor Support for changing the field
size in the database. Brandon should contact support to get these
instructions. I've done it several times, especially with VB form
Character fields. You need to change the # of characters to less
than 254 for Access or Crystal to treat it as a character field
instead of a Memo field.

It is pretty easy to do with the instructions. The only caveat is
that you have to do it when everyone is out of the system. I am
actually coming in this weekend to change another field size.
