Yes, I agree....call support for an opinion. Especially since if there really is a way (other than custom programming) to enlarge a field it would surely require their blessing in order to avoid being refused future support.
Really wild kludge suggestion....use a VB Form or other large text field to contain their own shorter rev. # then use this as a an index point in the text field to parse out the customer's longer value. I am not sure though how this would play out with EWB but it might work for other uses like shipping forms and invoice.

Todd,
I know what I am doing is only changing the format of the data for
the ODBC connection, but I thought there might be a way to use the
Data Dictionary to do what she wanted. I had never attempted to do
what she is asking and only offered it as a possibility that she
could ask support about. I just went in and looked around for a
second, and maybe there isn't anything useful there after all. Still
might be worth the call though. If you come up with a fairly
painless way to do it, by all means share it with the rest of us just
in case...

had thought that the actual DB remained unchanged and this was sort
of like saying let the field pretend to be a substring on the first
254 characters (or whatever CR accepts) when in reality the whole
field was still out there. In this case enlarging the schema view
would not really expand the data set. My experience with other
databases has been if you truely expand a field then somewhere in the
process you end up doing an unload/reload of the data and also have
to define some sort of padding rule for the extra space (pad with
spaces, null, zero, etc...). And down the road any updates involving
Epicor generated schema changes would get really messy.
