We are on Vantage 5.1 and we have 19 touch screens. When Vantage was first
purchased someone made the decision to use PC's. They have been nothing but
trouble. I think mainly due to the dirty environment and the spikes in
power we constantly have on the mfg floor.
About 3 months ago we started buying thin clients from Televideo. They make
great products. We use their all in one unit. Its a 15" LCD Flat panel
with a Windows CE integrated thin client. Its a very nice unit. It uses
standard VESA mounting brackets. We have hung them on walls and polls
without keyboards or mice and we have had not trouble at all out of them.
The cost for the thin clients with integrated 15" LCD Flat panel is around
$1,200.00. For the stand alone thin clients I think the cost is right at
$300.00.
We only run Terminal Services. I really couldn't every find a reason to run
Citrix. The cost for a Windows 2000 Terminal Services call is around
$79.00. If you run Terminal Services on a Windows 2000 or Windows XP client
then you dont have to purchase this CAL. If your run Windows 9X, NT 4.0 or
ME as the client then you need to purchase this CAL. Microsoft includes an
ActiveX control for use on the web as well as a ready to us ASP document.
Took us about 15 minutes to get Terminal Services running via our web site.
If you have any other questions just ask.
Thanks

Subject: [Vantage] Data Collection & Citrix
We are getting ready to upgrade to 5.1. Along with that we'll be
installing the new Vantage module Advance Material Management which
requires us to start using Data Collection. We have been considering Data
Collection for years, so this is a good opportunity.
Our challenge is whether to buy 10 new PC's for the floor or to get
a Citrix box that will also get us remote access. We have 16 old PC's from
our last upgrade.
I would like to hear from any of you who use Data collection with or
without Citrix. If you use Citrix or any other similar solution, what were
the considerations for the decision.
