We used the conversion tool to bring over Materials, Vendors and Customers and it worked very well. We have our old system still running to reference old data, i.e. PO's, Shipments, Invoices, etc... For the short period of time you will need this data I think it's a better to refer back to your previous system rather than clutter your new one.

If so, do you know if it has the business logic already programmed or do you have to know it?

What I mean is, if I import an invoice for a customer that doesn't exist will it allow me to import the invoice or will it prompt me that I need to add the customer first?

Or what about importing historical serial numbers? Do I have to bring over the sales orders, packing slips, invoices? If so does the Conversion tool inform you of that?

Any input would be great.

This would seem a perfect place for AutoIT to automate a task with a script.
Other methods would leave me concerned about data corruption.
Well, unless you are using price lists, but I assume from the question you
are not.

No business logic. You have to know which tables need to be populated
and manually load them.

We used many of Epicor's customized maps for data conversion;
specifically we used their maps for Parts, Methods of Manufacturing,
Inventory, Costs and Purchase Orders. The maps were a good framework
for data conversion in that they covered the tables that needed to be
populated for each file type. For example: Part loading hits a lot of
tables that someone new to Vantage may not be aware of. Also,
Inventory and Cost loading is not exactly straightforward as a
PartTran audit trail has to be built for each inventory and cost
transaction.

I use the term framework because you are still responsible for the
business logic. A lot falls into your lap. I was in the middle of
data conversion a year ago and it was a very nerve wracking
experience, even with the maps. As Butch said, the conversion tool
just loads the stuff into the database, it has the easy job.
