DB Backup Blank Title 57363

From your example I am assuming that you are running version 6.1. If you are using the batch file that came from Epicor/Progress, then all the files you need to restore your database have been backed up. The batch file uses the Progress utility to make a copy of your database...the file with the .1 extension is created. You would then use the Progress utility PROREST to restore your database using that file. I've restored from backup many times and this process is pretty solid.

Hope this helps,

Hi All,

I have been backing up our servers on a daily basis, but I need to
know that I have Vantage backed up properly. A batch file runs every
night to backup the database to a separate file.

That file is called backup61.1 (a .1 file). It is the full size of
our database. This file is then being backed up on the backup tapes.
I don't back up several other files because Veritas states that they
are in use.

In case of a real emergency, will I only need that main db backup file
to get up and running? Or are there other files I should be backing
up as well.

Thanks in advance!
Ben
Ben,

Typically, you will need to get the entire contents of the mfgsys
directory - minus the DB folder because those files are in use.

To restore completely, you will need:

CD or DVDs for Progress and Vantage

Backup tape.

Make a vanilla install of Progress, Progress SP, and Vantage 6.1 to set
all the registry values etc - it is recommended that you make this the
same path to eliminate any issues that occur. Next, rename the vanilla
install MFGSYS61 directory (note you may not want to remove this just
yet). Insert backup tape and restore the mfgsys61 directory. Finally,
restore your database from the tape to a temporary directory. Run the
prorest command to create the database and the necessary files.

Start the databases and this should be all you need to do.

Thanks,

Best bet if you can't get it working. Install Virtual PC and run the
32-bit XP version...should allow you to work.

The progress utility Probkup will generate one backup file if that is
what you are using. This is the file that Veritas should be backing
up.

If you do not have a test database, I would create one and restore the
backup to test on a regular schedule (Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly?).

The Progress utility Prorest will restore the backup file to the Test
database. Go into the test database do some inquiries and run some
reports.

This is the best way to validate your backup file that I know of. It
keeps someone up to date on the restore procedure and it also gives you
a test bed

with up to date data to experiment on.

I use Window CMD (DOS bat) files for the backup and the restore routines
so they are always consistent.

Hope this helps,

Dale

I do the same. Here is my batch file to restore the live database to my
test database:

c:
cd c:\epicor\test61\db
c:\epicor\prgs91d\bin\prorest mfgsys c:\backup\backup.1

After I verify it completed successfully, I run the following batch file
to allow the database to run in the new location:

c:
cd c:\epicor\test61\db
c:\epicor\prgs91d\bin\prostrct repair mfgsys

Mark,

I'm a new customer, just purchased back in Dec 2006. My orginal server that I bought had the 64-bit of the windows 2003. After I bought it, I had to return it. I was told that the 64-bit version of Windows Server was not supported. I never researched it any further, but it might be the same for the Client side.

Installing a 32-bit VM of Windows might be the only option.

Joe
