We are looking to implement a database calendar that all of our managers are
able to access. Each individual manager will enter their employee's vacation
days on the calendar. Our objective is to be able to look at this calendar and
see when any employee is going on vacation. So, this would have to be a server
application. Is anyone using something like this, or know of some good software
I could look at?

Thanks!

Wendy,
We use MS Exchange 5.5 as our e-mail system. Within Exchange, you
can set up "public folders" that you can make accessible to any or all of
your employees. These folders can contain different types of items. Among
others, we have two different calendars: an "Out of office" calendar (used
for vacations and other situations where someone will be off-site) and a
conference room calendar (used to reserve that resource). Depending on the
security rights you set up, users may be able to delete just their entries,
or a group. For instance, each manager at Major can delete or modify any
entries made by their direct reports. In addition, I have several
"administrators" who can delete any entry in the calendars.
Call me if you have other questions.

We have just switched over to ACT 2000. It seems to be one of the best

We have been using a product called "ICAL version 3.1" for this same purpose.
You can find it at www.brownbearsw.com. Some guy in Alaska programmed it. It's
inexpensive and works great. We have the multi-calendar version so each
department can have their own, plus we have one for absentee for the entire
company. It's easy to set up and has security features too.

Ken,
I would be interested in finding out more how you have your Exchange
setup for the out-of-office. I have already setup our conference rooms
and overhead projectors as resources so people can reserve them for
meetings.
I thought about doing the same for vacation, but as a resource, it can only
be scheduled for one person at a time.
What I have been playing with is Visual Basic to read all the users
calendars for "Out of Office" time slots. My goal is to have this run every
night
and generate a table/calendar on a web page for our intranet. I'm still new
to
Outlook since we just switched to it a month ago, but I do feel it has great
potential.
If you don't mind, could you tell me how you have your "Out of
office"
calendar set up and what type of rights each user needs and how does data
get entered into this calendar? It might help me spark some more ideas or
head
me in a different direction. Thanks...........

Our Exchange server (we're using 5.5, and Outlook 2000) shows a box
called "Public Folders" with "Favorites" and "All Public Folders" beneath
it. Here's how I set this up:

1. Select "All Public Folders"
2. Right mouse and select "New Folder"
3. Name the folder and in the "Folder contains:" box choose "Appointment
items"
4. Right mouse on the new folder and choose properties
5. Go to the "Administration" tab. There you can set permissions by role

I have permissions for the default role set to allow editing and deletion of
items marked "own" (i.e. people can change their own entries). All in all,
this works pretty slick.

The hardest thing to get folks to understand is that when they add an
"appointment" to this calendar, they should set it up as an all-day event,
which will draw a box on the calendar rather than placing it there with a
time.

How did you set the conference rooms up. I tried playing with this

Where did you create the calendar; from the server or a workstation?
Did you move the calendar to the public section?
Is there any literature (article # ) that I could read on this?
Did you have to set up a person for this calendar or could you just set
up a calendar?

I looked at Ken's instructions but don't quite understand where the
calendar is. Any help that you can give me would be appreciated.

No, I don't think printing support has changed at all. We finally gave up on
deskjet printers and have been buying HP LJ4050N for workgroup printers and
the HP LJ1100 for personal printers. The LJ4050 driver is really solid, but
we have had a few problems with the LJ1100.

I don't think anybody puts much development effort into deskjet printer
drivers. The laserjet drivers seem much better.

Jeff: I have done this in the financial reports
in Vantage. It is fairly simple to do however each
month you have to 'reset' the column's to include
the previous period which was the current period
last period. Kind of a pain. Unless someone else
knows of a better way ....

Financial reports cannot be posted on egroups. In your financial designer
look at # of periods and period and year offsets. You can set these up for
prior periods and prior years so when you run a current period report it
will calculate prior periods and years if it is setup properly in the
designer and you do not have to change anything once you have this setup.

We have a deskjet 890c that we use for routers that print on yellow paper.
Anyway after a lot of aggrevation trying to get the dang printer to work on
a w2k workstation (server nt 4.0) i created a standard tcp/ip port from the
add printer (local) screen then i found the ip address of the hp on the
network and called the port the ip address. It worked I have done this on 9
machines (w2k) without any problems

Hi Tom, Does Terminal Server 2000 have upgraded drivers for printers. As
you know, only the drivers on the CD have been tested from Microsoft and
every time I try to use a different driver the system crashes. Was just
curious if they have included some of the HP deskJets like 810C, 895C,
750...etc. I have tried several compatables but to no avail....

Any suggestions?

Since where on the subject is anyone using Windows 2000 terminal server?

We just recently installed WIN2K terminal server and the latest Citrix
release to support it in our lab. I have Vantage v4 on an NT4 server in the
lab also. I setup published apps and a domain farm in the new Citrix for
testing Vantage, Outlook and MS Access. So far everything works like it's
supposed to. I have installed the client on an NT4 Workstation and WIN2K Pro
system. No problems there either.

Our production environment uses an NT4 server for Vantage, and NT4 Terminal
Server Edition with Citrix for WAN connections. The new Citrix version on
the WIN2K server requires an update for the client. This new client can
access both our domain farms with no problem. (We use Citrix published apps
for all clients over the WAN.)

I was wondering if anyone had a stock status report that I could dump
into an excel spreadsheet or tell me how I can put the existing one into
excel.

TIA
