E9: Install E9.05 on Windows 10

Hi Simon,

We are also using a server on the same network as the E9 server for running the Epicor client via a RemoteApp.
This works ok and the compression setting wouldn’t come into play.
What I’m referring to is trying to pull data from the OpenEdge database via ODBC.
The time it takes to pull big tables, like PartTran, is painful.

Joe,
Virtual Box or Hyper-V on windows 10 will work. Virtual Box is pretty slick now these days.

I'd be really curious if anyone has attempted to make a Docker container for E9 or E10 though.

With regards to hosting and performance, are the user accounts setup to use compression, and have you tried playing with the compression settings in the default.mfgsys?

You can use the configeditor.exe from the client directory if you are not keen on editing the file directly.

Since installing E9 we have seen our fair share of performance issue, What I can say is that increased network bandwidth and client RAM appears to have a big impact. On the server side using Nvme disks (Intel P3700) for the EpicorData folder and the SQL database and log files made an improvement.

What sort of bandwidth do you have between your App server and your client workstations?

Kind Regards
Simon Hall

Hello,

I am trying to install E9.05.702A on my laptop that is running Windows 10.

I know that this configuration is not supported but I’m trying to get a local test server setup.

Does anyone know how to get this to work?

More specifically, when trying to install OpenEdge 10.2A x64, the install will create the directory, copy the file vnstart.exe, vnstart.exe starts and then shutdowns with no error.

I have admin access to my laptop so permissions should not be an issue.

I am thinking you would be better off setting up Hyper-V and create a virtual machine for this.  In actual fact you could to a Physical to virtual from your production environment to clone it.  There are some caveats with this method (i.e. the cloned machine cannot have the same name as your production if it is running in the same network)  There are plenty of tutorial about performing this on the Web.

If you want to create a new VM and you don't have the licensed media then you could attempt it with a 180 trial version of windows server (version dependent)

If you are determined to try and get 9.05 on Windows 10 try turning the UAC off and attempting to run the installer in windows 7 compatability mode.

I have never tried to install the server side of 9.05 on Windows 10, but the client works fine.

Finally another alternative may be to install it on an AZURE virtual machine.  If you have never used AZURE before you should get a free trial, after the trial period ends you would need to pay, but only while it is turned on I understand.  Someone let me know if I am wrong on that score.  For a test environment it would be very handy.  Once again I have not done this, but if you are only using the test data I can't see an issue,

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback.
I decided to install VirtualBox on my laptop and I’m working to install Server 2008 R2 and then I will install Epicor 9.05 there.
Azure sounds interesting but what I really need is something local so that I can do demos for training without having to be connected to the network with the server and, most importantly, have very quick access to the data.
Right now, out Epicor 9 server is running on a hosting server that we connect to over the internet and pulling data into excel or Access from OpenEdge is painfully slow. I would imagine that the Azure setup would be the same.
