We just finished a customization similar to this for a customer. When a user
enters a run-out part in the engineering workbench it will prompt them that
this is a run out part and tell them the default alternate part. They then
have the ability to click on the "yes" option to repopulate with the
alternate part or "No" to continue as is.

You can create a BPM to do this - having the ability to do an informational
message or an error message.
If you want to get more involved a customized form wouldn't be that hard to
do either.

Subject: [Vantage] Early Shipping Warning
I'm looking for ideas on how to generate a pop-up warning message to my
shipping department when they try to enter a customer-shipment earlier
than the "early-ship-date" we have set in the system. For the time
being, they should see a warning, but still be allowed override the
warning and process the shipment.
Has anyone done something like this before? What tools might I consider
using to do this?
Thanks.
