EDI Software

Todd, We have been using Gentran for 3 years, we send and receive using the
product. It has been very stable. We have no regrets to date.

Does anyone have an opinion on Sterling Commerce "Gentran-Director" EDI
software?

Anything you like better?

Thanks,

Todd Anderson

We've been using Gentran for about 5 years, Its been pretty reliable once
configured correctly. Tech support had to help. I have it set to pull in
documents by itself once a day. We haven't transmitted as yet. The
"Trading Partner" setup is convoluted but once set it stays. I don't think
any other software could improve on it. It is inherent for edi to be
complex and convoluted. If you're going to get GenTran you should also get
FORMS integration. The forms integration will pay for itself if you have
more than 5 trading partners. (One Company with 5 locations is 5 Trading
partners) Sterling will create a scratch form for you for about a grand.
If you have a mandate letter they will create one for $250.00. No guarentee
WHEN you'll get it though.
If you're adventurous forms integration is a tedious chore. (Trust me,
we have 35 trading partners) Once you get a document set up you can reuse
with other trading partners if they use the same standard. You can get a
working translation document (830) in about half a day. You wont know what
it looks like till you get your first data transmission. Then you'll spend
another day getting it tweeked so somebody can read it. The defaults in the
forms program are such that it will translate a single page of data into 500
pages (Lots of white space) if you dont clean it up first.
I guess I'd buy Gentran again, but hey! I'm discovering I like pain and
boredom.
