Entering BOM's?

Hi Anthony,

I sent an email directly to your listed address but I wonder if it may have been picked off as spam. I would like to work out a timeframe for this, which you offered yesterday.

We generally end up building the BOM and methods in the quote module, then get datails in engineering workbench after engineering creates the manufactured items in part. Purchased parts are entered mainly by estimating as needed for their quotes.

We make 100% custom parts, we do not have a product line of our own.

We also will use CADLink on some larger assemblies, this can be a pretty good time saver in those instances. Using it on smaller assemblies and individual items doesn't really save anything. In fact, it can take longer than man ual entry.

We use the DMT for transfer of old methods from Vantage to Epicor. However, our experience with it shows it to be glitchy.

YMMV.

>>BOM entry
This is how a mfg company with about 50 employees is handling them now.

Engineering does most of the BOM maintenance - about 6 people in the department now.
Hand entry of part numbers and materials and a BOM can range anywhere from 1 to 1500 mtls.
Rarely... someone will import a BOM via the Eng. Workbench using the action "Revision" --> "Get Details" --> "Get From Import".
Never became too popular though... considered "tricky" to export from Solidworks and get into a useable .csv file.

Currently production maintains all the operations in methods. Shifting that responsibility to Engineering has come up in discussions but has never moved beyond the talking stage.

Engineering users are not currently set up to use the DMT. I have used it to load BOMs before & liked it.

Users were made aware of CADlink and given promo documents.
No requests for further action yet.

How are others entering BOM into Vantage.  Do your engineers enter them, do you have an “engineering data entry” personnel, or do you have a third party software to enter your BOM’s.   If third part software, which one and do you like it?

Right now, our engineers are hand typing are BOM’s which is coming a bit time consuming.

Well there are many directions you can go…

I enter our BOM’s in the Engineering workbench. That is probably the quickest way to get started…

This is all a matter of opinion and the size of your company.

Many companies have Document Control Clerks (or other titles) that enter the data into the system.

Most companies do not like to pay Engineers to do data entry.

I’ve been in places where the Engineering group handles all of it, from drawing to part creation to rev control.  Ive been in places where Engineering is so weak even the drawing package leaves little to desire.

Regardless of the path you take there are tools that will import BOMs from drawings as long as Engineering creates the blocks on them (drawings).

CADLink is a good tool.  It will take parts that are on drawings and will create a list of materials that can be imported into Epicor.  The drawback is that the parts have to exist first in Epicor before the import will work.  The other drawback is that I think it only works with Solidworks.  I could be wrong in saying that but it is worth looking into.

Goes back to the size of your company. I wouldn’t consider managing “Revisions” a data entry function…after all, where do your costs come from?  The revision… Engineering should want to be involved!

I took a look at CADLink and it looks amazing! It is overkill for my application…

Yes it would….because if the parts don’t exist you would have to use DMT to have those entered first before you could import revs.

We went live almost a year ago on E9 702A and I was able to upload the MOM's and BOM's into the database using the DMT. It was a little tricky for parts that had multiple operations and large material lists, but once I developed good DMT Template it went well.

I think it depends a lot on your business, details of BOM’s, etc.  For us, each mold (for the most part) is unique with a  unique BOM. Our BOM’s are created in ProE.  We have our designer export the pro/E file to excel.  Then we have our buyer just copy and paste the file from excel into Epicor.  Our BOM’s have between 50-200 items and the entire process takes about 5-10 min per mold.

YMMV.

Engineering users are not currently set up to use the DMT. I have used it to load BOMs before & liked it.

Users were made aware of CADlink and given promo documents.
No requests for further action yet.

We are currently using dmt to put the boms into their relevant jobs. But we have a plan to get serve connect to pick up an xml file and control part creation, revision control and boms.  We had it working with pro e only for the company to change to catia.  Starting again now after a lot of investment.

I would recommend using the product configurator in this case…

Thanks. However, we have been completely unable to get configurator to do anything of value. Likely we have just never seen it operate as it is designed, but to me it seems to complicate a simple process.

If there is a way we could schedule a gotomeeting or webex so I could see configurator working in a functional manner, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
      Jeff

We can do that. Let me know when.

Thanks. However, we have been completely unable to get configurator to do anything of value. Likely we have just never seen it operate as it is designed, but to me it seems to complicate a simple process.

If there is a way we could schedule a gotomeeting or webex so I could see configurator working in a functional manner, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

I would recommend using the product configurator in this case…
