Epicor 9 on Windows 2008 opinions

I sent this to the wrong subject..gotta love digest mode.

Regarding 2008 64-bit, here's what we did.

We installed 2008 core server (hyper-v) and then made several virtual 2008 servers. The 64-bit one works fine and E9 and components work for the most part. We had problems with the Progress Explorer Tool not working in the 64-bit environment, but installing this on another workstation seemed to remedy the problem. There's always the configuration files you can manually edit if you feel brave enough. You will need to either modify the built-in firewall to open up the communication ports or disable the firewall in 2008. Recommendation would be to turn off if you are already behind a corporate firewall at least in the beginning to rule out any security issues.

Brad, I've been looking for a fix. I'll give this a shot.

We are planning on upgrading from Version 6 to Version 9. Since we are buying a new server I am open to using Windows 2003 or Windows 2008. I'm leaning towards 2008 based on some early info I received on virtual apps on 2008. Little background on our setup, we have 4 plants in the same industrial park. Plants 1 and 2 are next to each other and connect with fiber. Plant 3 and 4 are next to each other and also connect to each other with fiber. Plant 1 is connect to plant 3 via wifi, and the Vantage server is located at plant 1. Our Version 6 setup has the database on a server at plant 1, but I have a server on both sides of the WIFI backbone serving up the DLL's and EXE's. We went with a wifi connection because of a patch of protected wetland in between plant 1 and 3 which makes running fiber impossible.
I was told that the wifi connection might not be able to handle the load that Vantage 8 would present and I'm guessing that Epicor 9 would be no different. Looking for some ideas on how to get Epicor 9 to work. I've heard about virtual apps on Windows 2008 and was wondering if anyone had used that and what where your experience with that. Otherwise my only other option that I can think of is running a terminal server which is somewhat of a pain as it adds another log in layer for the users.
Have you talked to the phone company or whoever owns the lines in the area
to find out if there is are any dark lines in the area that could be used as
a way to create a connection between the 2 buildings that way since I assume
all your lines in the area are underground versus being up on poles?

Then again, it also depends on the number of users in the alternate
buildings, are they full offices or just plants with a couple MES admin
people in each? If you have less than 10-15 total people from 3 and 4
connecting, then I would go with the Terminal Server, otherwise I would talk
to the phone company and see what kind of options they might be able to
offer you.

Also, there is another option instead of wi-fi you might want to look into
if you have line of sight, unless it is what you already have, and that's a
microwave connection, they are more reliable and faster than traditional
wi-fi connections, and there is a Vantage Customer on 8 who is using it
fairly reliably.

I'm also on V6.0 and looking to jump to E9. I just built my E9 test
server. AT this time PET will not run on Windows 2008 server. You would
have to run it from a workstation. I decided against this. I'm running
Windows 2003 Enterprise 64 bit on my E9 test server. At Perspectives
this year they will be rolling out the E9 64 bit version.

I'm much in the same situation as you. I have two buildings connected by
fiber and two buildings connected via point to point T1's over Terminal
Services. TS logins are easily automated, put a check in a check box and
put the password in once. I put a vantage icon on their rdp and they
click on it then click connect. I put the Vantage shortcut in all users
startup so it auto launches as soon as they come in.

E9 also is bringing out their web based version. At this time E9 is
about 80% functional via the web. This will require you to setup a web
server.

In order to run the PET on Windows Server 2008, add the following
registry key. This is working for us (64-bit Windows Server 2008).

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Java VM

The value name is "EnableJIT"
The value type is 32-bit DWORD
The value data is "0"

Thanks Brad, I'll try that on my next rebuild of E9 when the 64 bit
version comes out.
