New Vantage server Setup?

Jason,

Yes and No. Yes that is true that the Open Edge Progress Explorer Tool
GUI or "PET" WILL NOT work on Windows Server 2008. The reasoning is
because the PET GUI is based on the fact that Windows Server 2008 uses a
completely different MMC (Microsoft Management Console) and they are
incompatible with one another since our buddies at Microsoft decided to
change all of that. If you read up on the MMC change between 2003 and
2008 you will see what I mean. However Vantage may still run on
Windows Server 2008 just fine and just use the client on a local
workstation "Windows XP and/or Vista Business" to just remotely connect
to the AppServer to be administered. I have had NO issue's doing it
this way, because lets be frank, us IT Professionals are moving on with
our Server OS's, etc though I really am fighting the format of my hard
drive and moving to Vista. L

That's all it really is though, and I have not had any problems doing
so. Contact me if you need some help or guidance.

Thanks,

Windows 2008...below is his email from my question whether Vantage

This has to do mostly with OpenEdge 10.1b and the problems with Progress
Explorer Tool not working. There are a handful of problems with the
10.1b database not running correctly in 2008 as well, like tuning the
database has no effect on it so you run dog slow.

With 10.1c and E9, the problems with the databases not running correctly
have mostly disappeared, but the Progress Explorer Tool still does not
run on the server and you need another XP or 2003 box to run it on.

Subject: [Vantage] New Vantage server Setup?

We are looking at a new Vantage server I have a few questions? The
local IBM VAR is quoting a Server running windows server 2008 downgraded
to server 2003 based on Epicor not supporting 64 bit, would it be better
to install with server 2008 in a 32 bit mode and have the option of
upgrading to 64 bit later? The VAR is quoting 25 hour for on boarding,
documentation and server setup with a Raid 1 array for the OS and Raid
10 array for Vantage (no Vantage related worked to be performed) seems
excessive to me, what is a realistic ? Any tips for moving the database
to a new server would be appreciated.

We are running a 64 bit Windows 2003 server. I did not go to Perspectives
last year, but the year before I spoke to Ben Nixon from the Epicor
technical support team. He was in there with a Microsoft rep. I asked if
it would be a good idea to go to 2008, because we were looking at buying a
new server for our 803.405 upgrade. Both of them said it is not a good idea
to go to 2008 until Epicor supports it. I don't know if they were talking
about Windows 2008 server at the 2008 perspectives.

25 hours seems like a long time to setup a server in my opinion.

I'm running Vantage on MSSQL on 64-bit with no problems. 14GB of RAM and the overall performance improvements with 64-bit are totally worth it. The progress code all runs in 32-bit mode, but at least with MSSQL the database takes advantage of 64-bit.

I'm not sure where Epicor is with support for Server 2008 so Server 2003 is probably safer. Also curious about MSSQL 2008 support, since everything I read says it's a great and safe upgrade.

Ideal layout for disks:

Volume 1 - System - RAID 1 mirror
Volume 2 - Epicor - RAID 1 or RAID 10
Volume 3 - Data (MSSQL or Progress) - RAID 10 mirrored stripe (mine is a 3 drive stripe, mirrored)
Volume 4 - DB logs/Tempdb - RAID 1 or RAID 10

You get a lot of bang for the buck by spreading out the workload across lots of spindles.

Exactly. I know when we did our setup it wasn't too much longer than
that. Honestly with technology these days setting up RAIDS is pretty
easy. 25 hours is ridiculous.

25 hours? Seems a bit excessive.

On the long end, I could see 6, maybe 8 hours(1 day) but the installation of
an Operating System, and adding it to your network, even if you bought 2 or
3 machines, it should still be capable of being done in this time period,
including some detailed documentation of what was done. When I was going
around doing Vantage Installations, I often ran into situations where the
server was completely blank and I needed to setup RAID and do the complete
installation of the OS and everything else, and this would usually only add
5-6 hours to my total time on site, but I also always did a full format
instead of a quick format during setup. I would expect a VAR who does this
as their business to be able to accomplish it in the same, or even less
time. Unless you are using some sort of unique system like a blade system,
there is no reason for it to take that much time.

As far as the 64-bit is concerned, there is no reason to not use 64-bit for
Windows 2003. It will save you money on Windows Licenses since you can stay
with Standard instead of needing to go to Enterprise, and there are no known
problems running 32-bit Vantage on a 64-bit system. The only things that
cannot be run on 64-bit are the add-ons like APM, and such, but those
shouldn't be on the same server as Vantage in the first place.

but that's just my point of view.

also, speaking of spindles...

more drives of smaller size is better than fewer drives of larger size, even
if it gives you the same amount of total GB Space.
