FIFO Blank Title 132653

This is what we have come up with to handle Make To Order parts that we ship from inventory.

Part XYZ is set up as a Make To Order part in Part Maintenance.

When XYZ is added to a Sales Order, the Make Direct flag defaults to "Checked".

Create a Job for XYZ and add a Make to Order demand link for the Sales Order. Set Production Qty to 0 and under Pull From Stock set Our Pull Quantity to the quantity on order. Add a second Make To Stock demand link for the quantity on order and set the warehouse to the shipping warehouse shown in the Sales Order. On the final Operation, check the "Auto Receive" box so that when the Time and Expense is recorded, the quantity produced is automatically received to inventory (No more Job Receipt to Inventory required).

When a Customer Shipment is created for the Sales Order Line, the shipping quantity now defaults from Inventory instead of from the Job.

Hi all,

At what point does a FIFO part have a unit cost assigned to it?

Thanks

Andy

Which one?  Purchased or manufactured?

Purchased…at the point of receiving the part.

Manufactured…at the point of receiving to stock or shipping off the job.  And if all the costs are not on the job at either of those points your FIFO layer is screwed because it hit a variance account!  If that happens you have to manually adjust the FIFO layer.  Welcome to FIFO hell….

It is but it is doable….mostly making sure someone is reviewing it first before it ever goes to stock or ships!!!

I wonder if you could help me with another issue.
When you transfer the job qty to inventory I would have expected the wip qty to clear to 0. Ours remains the same.
Then when the user goes to ship the job it still defaults to ship from wip and not inventory.
It is still not changing the part unit price. What am I missing?
Thanks
Andy

Hi John,

Check the Sales Order.  That usually drives how the product is to be shipped; from WIP (Make Direct flag checked) or from Inventory (Make Direct flag unchecked).

At another company I worked for that was using FIFO, we had to put BPMs in place, one that did not allow shipping from WIP if the parts were "taken to stock" and one that did not allow shipping from Inventory if there were no parts in Inventory to ship (they were still in WIP).

As Manasa said, "Welcome to FIFO hell"!!

Oh and heaven help you if you "forgot" to pick any material on the job BEFORE it ships!!   ;)

How are you moving it from the job to inventory?

They are all make direct as we don't store any inventory.
I was looking at bpm as a fix but seems crazy that such a basic function does not work.

I think it has to do with the fact that it is marked make direct on the sales order but in fact you are moving it to stock.

I know we are going to have the same issues here because we are FIFO as well and we are thinking about moving everything to stock!

If we find out soon I’ll let you know!

I agree.
The reason we move everything to stock at the moment is because we don't have the advanced material module. So we cannot track parts that are complete and remain on site for long periods.
Let me know if you work it out!

That is exactly what is happening.  How is the demand on the job setup?  Is it “Make to Stock” or is it “Make to Order”?  If it is Make to Order, then it should remain in WIP and ship from WIP.  If it is Make to Stock, it should be taken to stock using MFG Receipts and then shipped from Inventory.

Thanks Beth.
So on the order release I want neither make direct or buy direct?
It does make sense what you are saying.
Will the advanced material module give us visibility of all parts through wip?
Thanks for your help.

If you want to ship from inventory, make sure the “Make Direct” checkbox is unchecked.  The “Buy to Order” checkbox is for parts you may sell that you buy already manufactured from a supplier and send them on to your customer (in other words, you are just the middle man).

You said that you do not keep inventory on parts.  Is that only the parts you sell or does this include the raw materials you use to make parts?

If it is only the parts you sell, you will not want to have your parts as “Make Direct”.  Make Direct does not look at what raw materials you have in inventory to make the part.  It gives you PO suggestions to buy material directly for the job, even though you may have the materials already in inventory to make the item.

Advanced Material Management will give you visibility of parts running through WIP.  It is a lot of work to set it up though.  If you go that route, you will want to set it up in a test environment and test it out thoroughly.  Read up on it.  There are quite a few benefits you get from it, but you have to be willing to put the work in to get the results you want.
