How to automatically run a BPM automatically on a daily basis

Kevin, they have to use it as a scare tactic. I would, too. There are a
LOT of "challenged" customers out there. A LOT. :-) Of course none of
them are on this Yahoo list, however.

If anyone has been or is a consultant on this list, I'm sure we've all
walked into companies and stood in silent disbelief, and then left with a
great story for our colleagues. :-) I've seen the production server in the
break room plugged into the same power strip that the microwave and coffee
pot were plugged into. And, the coffee pot was sitting on top of the
server. So could it be possible for the 18-yr old "computer whiz" intern to
do a TRUNCATE Table InvcMisc because he thought it was a temporary log
table? :-) Yeah.

But then there are a lot of responsible, careful and educated folks, like
us, out here. You have to screw up pretty bad for them to void your
warranty and the process isn't necessarily black-and-white. But they have
to have something rigid in place to cover themselves (legally) from customer
carelessness.

I love how Epicor provides you with the tools to update data in your
database via ABL code, pushes that flexibility while they're selling you
their product, then fall back on the "it will void your warranty" when you
try to use it. I can see how they can, and should, take the approach that
if you update data via code, and that causes problems in the database that
they're not responsible. But it irks me when they throw out the "it will
void your warranty" as a scare tactic.

Lawsuits...

And you really need to think about your last question...what would you lose
from restoring a backup....transactional data.

In my opinion why risk it?

If they ever did that, what would be your next best steps? Couldn't you just
restore your DB from a backup before it was monkeyed with and move on with
warranty yet? I'm not voided just really curious about how they could truly
call it a permenant void unless you have modified their source code for the
actual application?

Need some help with this one. We have a BPM to put a customer on credit
hold if they haven't paid their invoice within 70 days. Our problem is that
we need to run this BPM nightly. How do can we do this? I was thinking
that we need to set up a process and then schedule it but our search for how
to do this hasn't turned up anything. Can anyone give us some insight?
Thanks for your help!

I haven't tried this... but if you can get a data directive to fire off the sysagent table you could schedule a patsy baq nightly and queue off that..

I would love a proper way to schedule a BPM or non-Epicor process, but
don't know of one.

I did hack together an ugly method that was in the "works but
embarrassingly kludgy" category. I created a BAQ report, scheduled it
for once a day under a unique username, and hooked my BPM to one of the
methods in DynamicQueryReport (typing that name from memory). Had to
add a bunch of conditions (checking the special username, report name,
etc) to prevent it from firing too often, but got it working.

The easiest way I've done this is to Hang on to Report Monitor ->
GetRowsKeepIdle. it runs every few seconds. Use a UD table to establish
excecution times / schedule.

Best method I found was to associate a BPM with a common method and only fire if it wasn't run yet today based on a user defined field in a control table.

Personally, I would move the code from a BPM to a separate .P file. Then
you can run it directly via prowin and just create a system task.

Even if it's a pretty complicated BPM, the code should be almost identical.

I was fighting with Epicor on this, they told me not to run a .p file against the database or it will possibly void warranties. I'm assuming because it is bypassing their business logic?

You can make a .P which invokes the business objects with no problems.

Thanks to everyone who had great suggestions for this. Appreciate the help!

Not sure if we will do the .p thing now that I know we could potentially
void the warranty.but may try it in test ;)

Speaking about drinking whiskey before noon.oh sorry, I meant Updating
records via SQL (LOL!).we need to get rid of a bunch of reason codes. One
of the suggestions was to get rid of them via SQL but we would need to know
every table that they are in. I know there is a request in to Epicor to put
an inactive checkbox in the table (with the logic to not display them if
inactive), but I don't know where that stands. So, I guess I'm asking if
anyone has done this.

you can run it directly via prowin and just create a system task.

Even if it's a pretty complicated BPM, the code should be almost identical.

If they ever did that, what would be your next best steps? Couldn't you just restore your DB from a backup before it was monkeyed with and move on with warranty yet? I'm not voided just really curious about how they could truly call it a permenant void unless you have modified their source code for the actual application?

Can you point me to an example or some documentation for doing this? I
know how to make an ABL program called from an Epicor screen (as a
persistent procedure) that calls business methods. But I didn't realize
that was possible outside of Epicor.

And for the warrenty comments: reading data via any process is fine.
Updating UD fields or tables in fine. But if you modify Epicor fields
outside of their business objects... then swim at your own risk.

Thanks,

Brian.

You can make a .P which invokes the business objects with no problems.

You could use a UD field on the reason code table and then modify the combobox's that display the reason codes to filter out the checked ones. While the system would not technically have inactivate the reason codes a user wouldn't be able to select it.

Personally, I would move the code from a BPM to a separate .P file. Then
you can run it directly via prowin and just create a system task.

Even if it's a pretty complicated BPM, the code should be almost identical.
