How to Handle Job Overruns?

This happens here, too. Our production control and accounting agree (for
once) they want to keep track of this stuff, so we stock it in the same bin
with the finished part, but as a different part number. Say this is part
35001 pre-braze. We stock it as 35001pbr. It has value to us, because we
may someday finish it and sell it, so we don't want to scrap it. Our
advantages are that we can find it (same basic part number), the value is in
inventory, and it is easily added as a material to a new job to finish it.
However, the parts are small so they don't require a lot of space-and they
can be bagged and tagged to clearly show the difference between complete and
not quite there yet. If we don't sell it after a certain amount of time,
it is written off as slow moving at the end of the fiscal year - and the
accountant is happy for the write-off, as well as knowing the full story of
why it happened.

We scrap them in the system and then put them on a shelf and track with a
spreadsheet. Eventually we either ship them on another order (if same rev.)
or after some period of time call the customer and see if they want to order
them (maybe at a discount) in which case the margin is "really good".
Without putting in inventory (against company policy) the only solution
seems to be off-line.

We may create a job for 1090 pieces to fill a customer order of 1000
but when the 1000 pieces are created the remaining 90 will often
remain unfinished. We can't put these 90 into inventory as a finished
or raw material part number and we would like to close the job so it
doesn't stay in limbo until the next (potentially never) order for
the parts.

We could put the 90 pieces into inventory as a different part number
but then would have no visibility when/if a customer order would
someday be placed for the original part number.

Any suggestions on how others are handling this would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

To resolve this use either the extended description, substitutes or memos on
part file to reference and find. Example: Substitutes could list unfinished
parts under another part number.

Just some ideas.
