Interview Questions for Epicor Administrator

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone here ever prepared questions for interviewing a person for Epicor Administration and is willing to share them. If not, what kind of questions do you guys think would give me an idea of how much Epicor the candidate knows?

Should I be asking very detailed questions like; how would you fix a mistake by accounting department if they reverse a cash receipt with an incorrect apply date(on a different period). How would you make sure your solution does not mess with bank statement processing?

I would like to this person to be able to do things I cannot do currently and naturally since I can’t do them, I don’t really know what to ask for to be sure they know it.

Thank you all in advance!

PS. This post might be under wrong topic. I chose E10 since our Epicor is E10.2.100.

Make sure you ask front end questions like that regarding financials, etc, but if you are looking for someone with skills like customization, development, etc, you may want to have them write a BPM to prove they can. Some people are really good at interviewing and can have you thinking they know how to do it all. The front end knowledge of how Epicor works versus administration, customizations, upgrades, SSRS, etc is a different knowledge set.

Be clear if you are looking for a functional role (supply chain, finance etc) or a technical role like Epicor development and server administration. ERP is very vast so a person who can code pretty sweet customizations may not know the how/when/why on fixing cash receipts. Honestly, that should be on the finance department to fix after initial training and SOP’s are written.

Bonus points if they mention EpiUsers.help though.

Thanks for all replies. I agree that finance department has to fix the issues on finance side however our finance department is not our strongest and they usually post transactions without double checking. I have to change around 5-10 invoice dates from SQL every month because they enter dates like 9/20/1984. I’m possibly moving to a different dept. so the new guy should be ready for dealing with stuff that cannot be easily reversed or fixed with epicor general operation tools.

I guess I’ll ask him to show me any report, bpm, baq etc. he created and ask him to explain how they work. I want to make him do a very simple SSRS report during interview but my boss, who is not familiar with any Epicor and ERP stuff, told me that would be too much. I’m gonna still ask him anyway cause I’m rebel like that.

If he mentions EpiUsers.Help then for sure he is hired

Someone who has the understanding of erp, CRUD operations,self-learner can be brought on-board and trained.
some of the question I have been asked:
what would you do if user complaints on system being slow?
user reports a bespoke work not functioning properly, how would you handle it?
how do you keep yourself updated with the technologies?
give some best practices you have followed.

Determine if you are looking for a person that covers both functional and system issues and ask questions on how the person will react to situations you have experienced. A repeat question for me would be why is Epicor slow, I get this error why?

Ask for a possible solution to prevent accounting to post dates in the past or future. Use of earliest apply date, open/closing periods and BPM to check for dates in processes where you see repeated issues. How comfortable is the person with teaching/training users. Ask what type of resources would he/she use if not familiar with a subject. Bonus for epiusers.help, Epicor Users Group, other online forums, contact with other users, Epicor guides and support.
