"Invalid Session" 8.03.408B

It can happen for a lot of different reasons.

First, no one should be leaving a session on overnight, that's a just a failure
of general system security. Everyone should be logging off their machines when
they leave for the night or the weekend.

One reason it can happen is with licenses being used up, and when the client
tries to re-acquire one, there isn't one available to be acquired.

Another reason can be if the session for that user has been deleted from the
active sessions through the admin tools.

I would recommend 2 things.

1- Make sure everyone signs out when they are going to be away from their PC for
more than a few minutes.
2- Check your active sessions, it is possible that some people are losing a
connection, re-acquiring that connection which is duplicating their sessions on
the server, which can end up giving you that error message.

We are running 8.03.408B on Progress. We occasionally receive "Invalid Session"
messages after a client sits overnight. Here are the Details:

Exception caught in: Epicor.Mfg.BO.ReportMonitor.
Message: Invalid Session.
Program: manager/Session.p
Method: Activate

This does not seem to happen to all clients at the same time; i.e. we can leave
two clients running overnight and maybe only one will have an invalid session in
the morning. It is not consistent how long the client has to sit idle before
the message shows up either. Sometimes Monday morning will be OK, and sometimes
there will be invalid sessions on Monday morning. Also, this happens on
hard-wired local clients (no wireless, no VPN remote access, etc). We have even
seen it happen on a client session running on the server itself after one night
of sitting idle. Has anyone seen this behavior before? Thanks,

-Adam

Adam,

Do you have windows automatic updates turned on? Sometimes the update
will reboot the database server and not the terminal server (Or the
other way) causing a loss of connection.

Do you occasionally shut the progress database down to do a "Cold"
backup? This can break also break the connection.

Faulty or intermittent switches or routers can also be nightmares.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the tips -- We have updates turned off. We do not shut the database down to do a "cold" backup. Also, like I said, we have had this happen to a client session running on the Vantage server itself, which seems to elminate a faulty switch (I would think anyways). That is why we are so baffled.....

There's a Progress timeout registry setting useful for version Vantage 6.1 Progress and below. Perhaps if you converted from 6.x it's still in force. Unfortunately, forgot how to set it. Perhaps someone else remembers.
