Issue entire lot to Job

I have a client that is needing to physically issue an entire lot of a part to a job. Imagine a can of paint where we only want to use an ounce of the 5 gallon bucket, but I need to put the whole 5 gallon bucket into production. How have others handled the inventory? We don’t want to show zero on hand in inventory because we don’t want to buy more when 5 gallons will last a long time. We also need to see where the 5 gallon bucket is located so the kitting team knows where to find it.
I’m sure there are other gotchas, but I seem to recall a cool feature that does this, but I can’t recall.

Jason, I think you are thinking of Planning Contracts.

Possibly, but I guess I don’t see how this would solve it yet.

So… I have solved it this way:

  1. have a primary inventory stock warehouse (example: “Stockroom”)
  2. have a ShopFloor warehouse (example: “FloorStock”)

BACKFLUSH Example:
3. Change the backflush location on Resource Group to consume from Floorstock
4. MOVE the inventory from Stockroom to Floorstock
5. when item is backflushed, it will take from floorstock.
6. at the end of the job(s), move the inventory back to stock (checking for accurate qty and adjust as necessary)

Material Issue example:
3. MOVE the inventory from Stockroom to Floorstock
4. ISSUE Inventory from Floorstock to Job(s) as needed
5. Once complete with all the requirements, return to stock.

We used to do this with WIRE which came on SPOOLS… you had to move the entire spool to the shop floor, consume it, then return to stock. This allows you to trace where the inventory is, while not consuming it and causing MRP suggestions to replace.

Thanks @timshuwy. That confirms my rough recollection.
