More on Login and Printing Slowdowns

Upgrade to Win 98 and you should see a speed improvement. I did and I did.

We've lived through the past weeks with a couple
of minor issues, with the main one being the login
and print slowdown of vantage. This is only happening
on certain machines. And all other network functions seem to
work fine (Word, Excel, Printing from other Applications, etc)

Here's the problem -
It is taking up to 3 minutes to bring up the Vantage login
screen, and then another 1.5 minutes to get to the menu
after logging in. When printing the Crystal forms (PO, Order
Acknowledgement, etc) it takes about 3 to 4 minutes to
print.

This is only happening on about 6 machines, and they are a mix
of both NT WS 4( 4 PCs), and Windows 95(2PCs). Other
people's PCs are working just fine, login in less than 30 sec, and
printing just fine.

On 1 machine, I've tried uninstalling Vantage and Progress, going through
the registry and removing all references to Progress 8.3, r: drive (Mapped
to Vantage),
and anything else that looked like it was related. Then I reinstalled
the client, and things are about the same. I've tried manually setting
the Network Adapter settings, and checked all network addresses for
that PC.

Anyone have any ideas about the slow response on these machines?

When we had a problem like this, it turned out that all the slow systems
were on the same hub and moving them to a different hub solved the problem.
The root of the problem was bad port settings on our switch.

Try unplugging a fast machine from the network and plug in a slow machine in
its place (or vice-versa) that will at least tell you if the problem is with
the systems or the network.

Something that goes along with this suggestion, is what kind of network
cards are in the fast machines and what are in the slow machines. If you
have an auto sensing NIC card on an auto sensing hub, they can be fighting
about the speed, slowing things down. Or if you have a 10mhz card in the
slow ones, and a 100 mhz card in the fast one, you might want to upgrade
cards. So look at your cards, and even the cabling along with Brian's
suggestion.

Tim,
With some Win95 machines, there is an updated Winsock 2.0 driver that you can install.
Here are the notes from epicor's support page: http://support.epicor.com/vantage/support/techupdate/95clients.asp

Slow Connection with Win95 Clients
SUMMARY:
Connecting to Progress Version 9.x using a Windows 95 client can be significantly slower than a Windows 98/Windows NT client. This solution discusses one specific cause of the slowdown.
EXPLANATION:
This solution addresses the significant difference between Win95 and Win98/WinNT clients when using the same application, on the same network.

Windows 98 ships with an updated version of Windows Sockets (Windows Sockets 2.0). The version may or may not be available on your Windows95 machine. If it is not available, you can download if from Microsoft's Web Site.

Specific information on this can be obtained at:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q182/1/08.ASP

NOTE: This URL was correct at the time of writing; it is subject to change at Microsoft's discretion.

The change to Windows Sockets 2.0 results in a significant performance improvement in the connection.

Try checking for Netbeui protocol in Network Neighborhood Properties. If
you don't have a specific reason to have it there, delete it, and reboot.
It slows things way down. Also get good network cards - big difference with
Vantage.
