Vtg 5 - splash screen & slow start

Yeah, ours slowed down by about 50% going from 4.0 to 5.0. We have both 10
and 100Mb LAN sections. On a fast PC on the 100Mb, 5.0 took 5 to 7 seconds
to start. On the slow stuff (10Mb) it was 18 to 30 seconds. Vantage 4.0
was like 5 seconds on the fast LAN and 15 - 20 on the slow.

5.0 is also doing something CPU intensive during the start up that 4.0
didn't. On older & slower PCs, it's really noticeable and the task manager
confirms it's crunching pretty hard for parts of the start up.

And as previously mentioned... virus scanners can slow it down a
*bunch*. I always set the whole Vantage drive letter to the exclusion list.

Hi All,

We're winding down our first week on Vantage 5.0.332. I upgraded us from 4
during the turkey time-out.

One minor annoyance: The startup splash screen only stays up for a
fraction of a second. At the same time, startup time has increased from 15
seconds to 20 - 30 for PCs that are still on our slow (10BT) LAN
segment. Lots of users get impatient (can't blame 'em) and click again,
and get 2 or 3 Vantages trying to start, which seems to increase the time
exponentially.

Does everyone else on 5.0 have this 0.2 second splash screen, or is
something wrong here? I see the following fix in the .333 patch, but
double the time is still just a fraction of a second -- ie, too short.

"XA Splash Screen SCR 2142 5.00.333 The Vantage Splash Screen now takes
double the amount of time to disappear, if another Vantage program doesn't
first make it go away."

-Wayne Cox
If you use Mike Podlin's Client Timeout Utility ($100), you can disable multiple logins on a per workstation basis. You can also set the timeout period per individual workstation (ie. our accounting department who take long times to do some larger Group transactions have a 40 minute Timeout. Other users get 15 minutes. We haven't had a problem with short licenses since installing it.

In Vantage 5.1, there is a new feature in User Setup to disable multiple logins per user.

After .333 the Splash Screen does stay on a bit longer - at least enough to notice it.

Once people get used to the slower login times, it seems they get more patient. In transitioning to a new facility we installed a 10Mbps Wireless LAN between the facilities. People on the downwind side had two minute waits for logins. Once the server was on the new side, that problem went away.

We noticed a slow down in general also when going from 4 to 5,

** Slow Load Issues Reported by Users
Customer Tracker select a customer (xai20-dg.w) wait on invoices.
Project Tracker select a project (omi20-dg.w) 1 minute the first time.
Customer Shipment Tracker select a different sort by such as Part. (sri10.w)
BOL Entry (Stacy) takes over 60 seconds.
Order Entry select a line. (1 to 3 minutes)

My solution for us on a duel processor 500mhz server with 512mb of RAM, was
to double the memory to 1gb then bump up the -b parameter from 60000 (240mb)
to 140000 (560mb) most of the slow loads went away, Project Tracker still
takes 1 minute the first time someone uses it.

Hope this helps!

We had a very big problem with Customer Tracker when we went from 4 to
5. If a customer had no invoices, it would take around 5 minutes before
control was returned back to the program after clicking the "Customer
Tracker" button. My users thought their session was locked -up.

The final solution was a patch from Epicor, and more importantly... a
dump and load of the database.

Wayne,
I just noticed that there is a file in the Yahoo Files that is supposed to prevent multiple launches of Vantage. Never used it, but here's the link. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vantage/files/_Misc/Vantage.vbs

Troy,

There are also 2 parameters that you can add to your 5.1 vtg file.

The first

VantageLoginTimeout=X

Only used at the login screen. For example, if you set the X above to 1, if
a workstation is sitting at the login screen for more than a minute, the
login will be terminated. This will help where users click the icon multiple
times and end up having 1 or 2 login screens beneath their current session.
The default is 2 minutes.

The second

VantageLowColor=yes

Will bring up a black and white login screen.

You can alter the bitmap image used for the splash screen using PhotoEditor
(or whatever) and convert to B&W or Greyscale. Actually our splash screen
is an entirely different image with our company logo and some of pictures of
our parts. Once in awhile I change the splash image for holidays for
important company messages. Just remember to preserve the original image
before you rename something else in its place.

Subject: [Vantage] Vtg 5 - splash screen & slow start

Hi All,

We're winding down our first week on Vantage 5.0.332. I upgraded us
from
4
during the turkey time-out.

One minor annoyance: The startup splash screen only stays up for a
fraction of a second. At the same time, startup time has increased from
15
seconds to 20 - 30 for PCs that are still on our slow (10BT) LAN
segment. Lots of users get impatient (can't blame 'em) and click again,

and get 2 or 3 Vantages trying to start, which seems to increase the
time
exponentially.

Does everyone else on 5.0 have this 0.2 second splash screen, or is
something wrong here? I see the following fix in the .333 patch, but
double the time is still just a fraction of a second -- ie, too short.

"XA Splash Screen SCR 2142 5.00.333 The Vantage Splash Screen now takes
double the amount of time to disappear, if another Vantage program
doesn't

first make it go away."

We're on a 10MB LAN and I've been wanting to upgrade to 100MB. Will
it speed up Vantage logins? I watched the network monitor and its
using an average of 75% of the NIC's bandwidth, seems high when you
consider having 10 people logging in simultaneously.

Do you have virus scanning running in real-time mode (scan all opens,
etc...)? If so try excluding the whole epicor folder (usually mapped as
drive E or V). We found Norton AV (corp ed) was causing severe login
slowness until we excluded the Epicor folder. The spalsh screen image
should not be what is affecting the login time.

WE temporarily used a 10MB wireless link between two buildings during our move from one building to another. Those users on the 10MB side of the wireless had 2 - 3 minute waits to log into Vantage. On the 100MB side it's more like 20 seconds. The color splash screen extended the login time on the 10MB side to more like 4 -5 minutes. It's the kind of waiting where you turn it on and go do something else for awhile. Fortunately, the 10MB deal was only temporary for us - Saved spending $4,000 on a full-speed wireless unit for a temporary situation.

If you can go to 100MB, you'll never be sorry.
