OT V6.1 slow start (was .Net was V8 Installations)

Another tweak that might help is to make sure that your network connection
is correctly pointed to your DNS server.

This drags up a vague recollection.....not sure if it applies to Win2K
though. But once upon a time I had several PCs that REALLY dragged with
Vantage and the common thread was their having for a time accessed a test
version of Vantage on another server. There were entries in the HOSTS file
(in C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc) that refered to the test server but when
that server was shutdown Vantage crawled. Removing the obsolete references
fixed it. It seemed that Vantage and/or the network connections were
constantly "confused" by not finding that server.

I can't get it to take less than 45 seconds to log on,

Thanks to that former post, that was the first thing I tried. No difference
on this work-station. It's W2K, P4 (2.8ghz), 1GB RAM -- I'm convinced there
is some old vantage 5.1/progress reference in the registry that it's looking
for, but I can't find it...thus the re-format. Course, she has 3 printers,
a scanner, 2 cameras, a document library software from the way-back machine,
Photoshop, project -- name some stuff -- on this system, so it could easily
be some .dll conflict as well. That's what scares me: back up her system,
reformat, reload all of this stuff and Vantage still won't be any faster.
She had no problems with 5.1, though, so I'll bring my magic wand on Monday.

Almost every other system loads 6.1 in 5-7 seconds...and it would be
different if that was the only place it was slow.

Her system consistently takes 15-20 seconds to load the Opportunity/Quote
screen, and the Customer Master as well. And OF COURSE, she is the person
who supports the sales department. It wouldn't matter if she couldn't open
the Engineering workbench -- she never uses it.

Any other ideas?

GRRRRR...

Lydia

Just incase you haven't already....have you tried clicking on the splash
screen to make it go away? We used to wait a very consistant 45 seconds to
get the login screen - usually right after the splash screen went away.
Thanks to a post here we now routinely click once on the splash screen, it
goes away and the login screen pops up a couple seconds later. Only
gotcha....you then, most of the time, have to click in the username field
before typing. Small price ot pay for faster login.
