Moving Vantage to new drive [SMC WIRE FABRICATORS]

You do not need to uninstall Vantage and reinstall on the new drive. You
can keep Vantage in place on the C: drive and then place the database
anywhere you want. Siply moving the database should free plenty of room on
the C: Drive. (this will save you quite a bit of work) I moved our DB onto
a new drive that is not shared (Epicor actually recommends this in one of
there documents talking aobut security). Then restore the database to the
new location and then use the progress explorer tool to point to the new
location.

Subject: [Vantage] Moving Vantage to new drive [SMC WIRE FABRICATORS]

Hello group

Am I planning this correctly? I want to move Vantage and Progress files
from one drive on our server to another. I plan on uninstalling Progress
from drive C: and reinstalling it on drive E:. Then I want to delete the
Vantage files (except the DB folder) and install Vantage on E:. Now, can I
use procopy to copy the database files from C: to E: without having to go
through the full conversion process again? This needs to be done because
the drives are getting too full and E: has more than enough room.

Thanks to all

Mel,

I don't know if you question was answered yet or not.

Yes, you can use procopy to move the database.

How would you move the database from one server to another? I'm doing my 3
to 4 to 5 on my test server and then I need to move the 5 database to the
live server to do the 5.1 upgrade. I want to keep the live server clean and
not install three previous versions of Progress.

Can I do this with procopy over a network drive or will that require just a
copy and then the repair utility?

Rick

Rick,

Either way you mentioned will work, or a third method (which I personally prefer) is to do a backup from the one system, and then restore it to the new location. To me it's a little safer.

True, I never thought of the backup idea but should have because that's how
I get our live data to the test side now. But isn't there some kind of
drive path data buried inside somehow? That was my understanding anyway.

Thanks,
Rick

When you do a restore, it does a lot for you. If there is a target database with multiple extents where you are restoring to, it will spread the database out according to the current .db and .st files. If there is nothing in the directory you are restoring to, it will plunk it down as one database and restore the .st files as needed, along with the current paths. It's pretty smart (I think ProCopy works the same way, but I've had problems with Procopy when copying across network drives).
